Breakfast with Santa planned Saturday, Dec. 3, at KCKCC-TEC Center


The Kansas City Kansas Community College Student Senate is holding the college’s annual Breakfast with Santa event from 9:30 to noon Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Dr. Thomas R. Burke Technical Education Center, 6565 State Ave. The event is free for the entire family.


While at the KCKCC-TEC, each family will have the opportunity to take pictures with Santa and enjoy fun interactive activities. These include writing a letter to Santa at the KCKCC Lil’ Blue Post Office, cookie decorating, creating letters for military troops, play stations for toddlers and preschoolers and a variety of crafts. The KCKCC elves will also help the children pick out and wrap a special gift for their parents.

Bonner Springs to welcome the holidays with Christmas tree lighting and Candy Cane Christmas Saturday evening


Bonner Springs will kick off a Candy Cane Christmas and Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3.


Bonner Springs will have a parade followed by the Mayor’s Christmas tree lighting at Centennial Park, 200 E. 3rd St.


All events are free and open to the public. There will be vendors and merchants open to 6 p.m. on Oak Street in downtown Bonner Springs.


The schedule of events includes:

– 4:30 p.m., a Candy Cane Hunt at Centennial Park;

– 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Project Graduation Walking Tacos fundraiser, at the Community Center Gymnasium, 200 E. 3rd St.;

– 5 p.m., Parade Line-up at Bonner Springs Christian Church, 148 N. Nettleton;

– 5:30 p.m. Parade, Nettleton to Oak to Centennial Park;

– 5:45 p.m., Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting at Centennial Park, performance by elementary school choirs.

– 6:15 p.m., Pictures with Mr. and Mrs. Claus, with hot cocoa and cookies, Community Center Gymnasium, 200 E. 3rd St.

A drive-through Holiday Light and Magic show is running through the holidays at the Wyandotte County Parks, 126th and State Avenue, Bonner Springs. It is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and continues through the holiday season.

Holiday Light and Magic show tonight

The Holiday Light and Magic show is running through the holidays at the Wyandotte County Parks, 126th and State Avenue, Bonner Springs.

Hours are 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3. It also is on Sunday at the same hours, continuing through the season.

A drive-through event with holiday lighting, there are more than 60 character scenes including Santa Claus, Nutcrackers and Snowglobes.

Last weekend, cars were charged $35 per regular car or vehicle. It is $40 for commercial limousine or van, and $55 for commercial bus.

Knights of Light holiday lighting event continues at Renaissance Festival grounds

Knights of Light, the third annual holiday lighting event at the Renaissance Festival, will continue Saturday, Dec. 3, at 130th and State Avenue, Bonner Springs.

Christmas lights and decorations will be placed at the festival’s buildings, celebrating with food entertainment, crafts and visits to Santa Claus. The event will run from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays through Sundays until Dec. 18, then will be open from Dec. 21 through Christmas Eve, as well as Dec. 30 and 31.

Tickets are $20 per adult and $12 for children ages 5 to 12, with free admission for children under 5. Children will receive free hot chocolate and every attendee will get a gift bag and a chance to win a prize.


Those who bring five or more nonperishable food items to the box office for a food drive will get $5 off one adult ticket. Tickets and information are available at www.kcrenfest.com.

Olde World Christmas tours today at Strawberry Hill Museum


Strawberry Hill Museum continues its Olde World Christmas tours today at the Strawberry Hill Museum and Cultural Center, 720 N. 4th St., Kansas City, Kansas. Tours are held Saturdays and Sundays at the historic Cruise-Scroggs building that is now a museum, and tickets are not available online on the day of the tour to guarantee a spot. But walk-ins are being welcomed at noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday.

Two free concerts planned Sunday, Dec. 4, and Tuesday, Dec. 13, by KCKCC music department

Two upcoming concerts will celebrate the end of the semester at KCKCC.

The KCKCC Chamber Choir will perform the Winter Choral Concert, “Don’t Give Up,” at 7 p.m. Dec. 4 at the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed building, Community Christian Church, 4601 Main St. in Kansas City, Missouri. The church is on the Country Club Plaza.

The concert is a vocal showcase of a variety of music expressing the palette of the human condition, joy, sorrow, hope, laughter and beauty.

The concert will feature two guest artists, who both serve on the voice faculty at KCKCC, Lauren Auge, soprano, and Julia Scozzafava, mezzo-soprano. The choir will perform works by Whitacre, Pedersen, Esenvalds, Parker-Shaw, Mealor and a new commission by Michael Engelhardt and Robert T. Gibson.

The second concert is the KCKCC Jazz Showcase at The Blue Room, which is in the American Jazz Museum, 1616 E. 18th St. in Kansas City, Missouri. It is from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Dec. 13. The concert will feature the four student ensembles attending and performing at the National Conference of the Jazz Education Network in Orlando, Florida, Jan. 4-7.

The showcase will feature the Blue Devil Funk Band, Advanced Jazz Combo and two student vocal jazz ensembles – Fusion and The Standard. The event is sponsored by the KCKCC Student Chapter of the Jazz Education Network.

Both concerts are free and open to the public, but donations will be taken for the department’s upcoming travel this spring.
