Upward Bound Academy to host 2023 college and community resource fair

The Kansas City Kansas Community College Upward Bound Academy is hosting its inaugural 2023 College and Community Resource Fair “Empowering Student Scholars” from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 10 in Upper Jewell on the KCKCC Main Campus, 7250 State Ave. in Kansas City, Kansas.

The free event is designed to empower high school students from Schlagle and Washington high schools and provide them an opportunity to apply to participate in the KCKCC Upward Bound Academy – a unique college preparatory initiative designed to help ensure collegiate success. The Upward Bound Academy is the latest in several community engagement programs at KCKCC. Only 60 slots are available so please make sure you secure a spot for your student by applying now. Former Upward Bound students and the Upward Bound Support Team will conduct a real talk segment highlighting their experience(s) while participating in TRIO Upward Bound programs.

KCKCC was awarded the Upward Bound (UB) grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Upward Bound is a national program designed to help participants gain the skills and motivation necessary to successfully complete high school and to enter and succeed in a postsecondary program at the college or university of their choice. Upward Bound provides students with academic, cultural and social activities intended to build skills, motivation and self-confidence.

During this event, high school students and their families will also be invited to explore options and connect with resources serving the greater Kansas City, Kan. community. Registered guests will enjoy dinner and a chance to connect with more than 25 local community organizations and colleges. One-on-one sessions are also available with admission representatives from public and private colleges and universities. Both two- and four-year schools will be featured.

Participants will receive tips on how to navigate the college selection process and learn more about admission requirements, financial aid, course offerings and campus life. Students and parents can discuss individual needs with college experts at the fair’s college advising center. A variety of KCKCC programs will also be present.

Career fairs set for Feb. 11

Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools is looking for talented people who can make a positive impact on the district’s 20,000+ students.

The district will hold its first of several career fairs on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 8:30 a.m. until noon at the KCKPS Central Office.

The district is looking to hire certified staff members, which includes principals, teachers, nurses, librarians, counselors, social workers, occupational therapists, school psychologists, SPED teachers, substitute teachers and more.

Classified positions are also available, including custodians, nutritional service workers, paraprofessionals, and administrative support.

The human resources team will be able to assist with the online application process and will interview applicants on-site. Appointments and walk-ins are welcome.

This career fair will allow applicants to learn more about available positions, interview for positions, and gain information on DEI, KCKPS Benefits and Kansas Licensure.

“This is a great opportunity to learn more about available positions and make a positive first impression with hiring managers,” said Assistant Director of Recruitment and Substitute Staffing Cynthia Faulks.

Central Office is located at 2010 N. 59th St. in Kansas City, Kansas.

Interested job seekers who cannot make it to the Feb. 11th career fair, can attend the next one, which is scheduled for Saturday, March 4. It will also be held at Central Office.

KCKPS is the largest school district in Wyandotte County and the fifth-largest school district in Kansas. The district serves over 20,000 students at more than 50 school sites.

KCKCC to hold open house on AET program

Did you know that you can become an advanced manufacturing technician (AMT) with little or no cost in two years through Kansas City Kansas Community College’s Automation Engineer Technology (AET) program?

More information about this program is available at an upcoming open house from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 8 at the Dr. Thomas R. Burke Technical Education Center, 6565 State Ave. in Kansas City, Kansas. The event is free and open to the public.

Wyandotte County has more than 5,500 skilled jobs available. Through its partnership with FAME (Federation of Advanced Manufacturing Education), students not only can be prepared for an in-demand career but finish debt free. Careers in this field can begin at $50,000 and go even higher, according to Wyandotte County labor statistics through Jobs EQ.

KCKCC students will spend two days a week at the college and the other three days as a paid intern at local manufacturers. This is an “earn while you learn” program.

The open house will give those interested an opportunity to learn about the program, visit the new AET lab and meet AET FAME students.

First developed by Toyota, the FAME program serves to solve a local skills trade shortage while providing a pathway for people to earn a technical associate of science degree debt-free. Currently, there are 32 FAME chapters in 14 states, and participation continues to grow.

Local manufacturing company leaders – Amsted Rail, Best Harvest Bakeries, Brill, Inc., Catalent, Empire Candle, INX International INK Co., TT Electronics and CH Guenther and Son dba Williams Foods, established the first FAME chapter in Kansas – the Kansas City FAME chapter. Supported by the Kansas MEP, Kansas Manufacturing Solutions, Wyandotte Economic Development Council and Workforce Partnership, the Kansas City FAME chapter expects to grow its membership base of manufacturing companies.
