Man charged with aggravated assault

Jermelle Andre Lamont Byers was charged on Monday with two counts of aggravated assault and one count each of criminal possession of a firearm and criminal damage to property.

The charges were filed by Wyandotte County District Attorney Mark Dupree Sr.

The charges were filed in connection with an incident on Nov. 30, 2016. Byers’ bond was set at $40,000.

“It needs to be known across this county that if you commit any crime in Wyandotte County, big or small, if we have the evidence, we’re coming after every last one of them. Because no person in my community should have to deal with being violated, because someone wants to be a criminal,” Dupree stated in a news release.

Other charges filed recently against other individuals in Wyandotte County District Court included:
• Jose Moreno Arreola was charged with one count of possession of methamphetamine.
• Saul Gallardo was charged with one count of possession of hydrocodone, one count of possession of oxycodone and one count of possession of marijuana.
• Megan Lisk was charged with one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

The charges stem from incidents on Jan. 29 and Jan. 30, according to the district attorney’s office.

KCKCC women get revenge on road; to play league leader Wednesday

Being at full strength does matter as Kansas City Kansas Community College’s women proved in a 68-63 win over Southwestern Iowa at Creston Monday night.

Without two of their top three scorers, Brie Tauai and Millie Shade, the Lady Blue Devils dropped a 63-61 home decision to Southwestern in their first game of the second semester Jan. 11.

This time Shade scored 21 points and Tauai 11 as KCKCC boosted its overall record to 16-5 heading into a major home court challenge against Jayhawk leader Labette Wednesday. The only unbeaten team in Region VI play at 4-0 and 19-3 overall, Labette brings a six-game winning streak into the 5:30 p.m. tipoff.

One of three teams with one loss, the Blue Devils (3-1) could move into a virtual tie for first with a win.

KCKCC jumped in front 22-14 in the opening quarter at Southwestern and led all the way. The Blue Devils led 55-44 before turning back a late Spartan challenge in the fourth quarter.

“It’s always nice to go on the road and get a win, especially against a team you’d lost to previously,” KCKCC coach Joe McKinstry said. “We did some good things. We don’t have statistics but I felt we did a better job of moving the ball around and had quite a few assists. But we’re still having trouble finishing, building a big lead and then letting teams get close at the finish. We can’t do that against a good team like Labette.”

In addition to 21 points from Shade and 11 from Tauai, the Blue Devils got 11 points from Aerial Holiday, 8 from Valencia Scott and 7 from Brooklyn Wagler.

Program on Bill of Rights scheduled Feb. 1 at Bonner Springs Library

The Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton Ave., will hold a Bill of Rights program at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, in conjunction with the exhibit, “The Bill of Rights and You.”

The new pop-up exhibit from the National Archives opened at the Bonner Springs Library on Jan. 23 and runs through Feb. 15. It commemorates the 225th anniversary of the ratification of the Bill of Rights.

The exhibit tells about an interesting period of American history, explaining the origins of the first 10 amendments to the Constitution, shows how each amendment protects U.S. citizens and looks at how Americans exercise the rights outlined in the amendments.

“The Bill of Rights and You” is organized by the National Archives and Records Administration, and travels through the National Archives Traveling Exhibits Service. The exhibition is presented in part by AT&T, Seedlings Foundation and the National Archives Foundation.

The exhibit is brought to the Bonner Springs Library in collaboration with the Kansas Humanities Council, and Federation of State Humanities Councils.
