KCK school board members to take oath of office tonight

Three Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools board members will take the oath of office at a school board meeting at 5 p.m. tonight at the Central Office and Training Center, 5010 N. 59th St.

The three include incumbents Maxine Drew and Wanda Brownlee-Paige, and new board member Rachel Russell.

On the agenda will be regular meeting items, as well as a discussion of student tutoring, bond refinance renewal, a discussion of a literacy program, a teacher residency program, approval of the Juneteenth holiday, a bid on replacement service vehicles, a report on a swimming program, a district independent audit, a discussion of legislative priorities, a report from the school naming committee, and a closed, executive session on personnel.

There also is a special school board meeting scheduled at noon Wednesday, Jan. 12. On that agenda is a tutoring program for students, a school boundary committee item, and a bond and budget update. Also scheduled is a closed, executive session on personnel.

Blood emergency declared in KC area

A local blood shortage has reached the emergency level, according to the Community Blood Center of Greater Kansas City.

There is less than a three-day supply of blood available, as there is a surge of COVID cases currently in the nation, according to the CBC. Some blood drives at schools and other places have been canceled because of the surge in COVID.

Donors can give blood at the Community Blood Center sites, as well as at mobile blood drives scheduled throughout the area. Donors are asked to make appointments online at savealifenow.org.

Accident reported on U.S. 73 near Hollingsworth

An accident was reported at 10:20 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, at northbound U.S. 73 just north of Hollingsworth Road.

According to a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper’s report, a Hyundai Sonata was traveling north on U.S. 73 when it left the road and struck a sign post.

The Hyundai then traveled across both lanes of northbound traffic, leaving the roadway to the right and striking a guardrail, the trooper’s report stated.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 49-year-old woman from Leavenworth, Kansas, had a possible minor injury and was taken to a hospital, the report stated.
