Schools cancel classes for Chiefs’ victory parade

The Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools and Kansas City Kansas Community College have canceled classes on Wednesday to allow students and employees to attend the Chiefs’ victory parade and rally.

There will be no school on Wednesday, Feb. 5, according to a KCKPS social media post.

KCKCC also has announced that all its locations will be closed Wednesday, Feb. 5, to celebrate the Chiefs’ Super Bowl win. KCKCC will hold its previously scheduled basketball games against Johnson County Community College Wednesday night as well as Academic Success Night. The women’s basketball will be at 5:30 p.m. and the men’s game at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Piper, Turner and Bonner Springs school districts also have announced there will be no school on Wednesday, for the Chiefs’ celebration.

The Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library also has announced it will be closed Wednesday for the Chiefs’ victory celebration. The due dates for all library materials that were originally due on Wednesday will be moved to the next day.

The Chiefs Kingdom Champions Parade will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. A victory rally will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Union Station, with the nearby World War I Museum allowing visitors on the north lawn.

Public consumption of alcoholic beverages will not be allowed in the parade and the celebration. A parade website will have more information on parade details, at https://www.sportkc.org/chiefsparade.

Standoff on Parallel ends peacefully

A barricaded person peacefully surrendered to police, without incident, on Monday morning, according to a spokesman for the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

The police were called to the 4100 block of Parallel Parkway about 1:30 a.m. Feb. 3 on a domestic disturbance, the spokesman stated.

When police arrived, they learned that after the disturbance, the suspect fired a weapon inside the house, according to the spokesman. The bullet traveled outside and struck an occupied residence next door, police stated. The suspect was gone when police arrived.

At 5:30 a.m. the suspect returned and the police responded, the spokesman stated.

The victim and the children were able to exit the residence, but the suspect refused to come out, according to the police spokesman. After a few hours of negotiating, the suspect surrendered to police without incident and was taken into custody, police stated.

The Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS.

Warm today, winter weather returns Tuesday

After a high today near 58, winter weather returns to the forecast on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

A wintry mix of freezing rain, drizzle and light snow is expected Tuesday into Tuesday evening, the weather service said.

Another round of light snow is possible during the day on Wednesday, according to the weather service. Overall accumulations appear minor at this time.

Today, the high will be near 58 with a light and variable wind becoming north northwest 6 to 11 mph in the morning, the weather service said. Winds may gust as high as 18 mph.

Tonight, there is a slight chance of drizzle before 9 p.m., with a low of 27, according to the weather service. A north wind of 10 to 14 mph will gust as high as 24 mph.

Tuesday, there is a 20 percent chance of freezing drizzle before 7 a.m., then a slight chance of snow and freezing drizzle between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., and then a slight chance of snow after 10 a.m., the weather service said. The high will be near 31. A north northeast wind of 14 to 17 mph will gust as high as 28 mph.

Tuesday night, there is a 20 percent chance of snow before midnight, according to the weather service. The low will be around 22 with a north northeast wind of 7 to 11 mph, gusting as high as 23 mph.

Wednesday, there is a 40 percent chance of snow, with a high near 30, the weather service said. There will be a northeast wind of 3 to 6 mph.

Wednesday night, there is a 20 percent chance of snow before midnight, with a low of 20, according to the weather service.

Thursday, it will be sunny, with a high near 36, the weather service said.

Thursday night, it will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 26, according to the weather service.

Friday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 38, the weather service said.

Friday night, it will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 25, according to the weather service.

Saturday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 40, the weather service said.

Saturday night, it will be partly cloudy, with a low of 30, according to the weather service.
