Legends Outlets invites sports fans to take pictures
The Legends Outlets, at I-70 and I-435 in Kansas City, Kansas, is setting up Kansas City inflatables on The Lawn for fans who want to take photos during shopping center hours. The center is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Also, KC City of Champions, a pop-up Kansas City sports apparel store at The Legends Outlets will offer official, NFL licensed merchandise during regular shopping center hours from Friday through Sunday, Feb. 2. At the Legends Outlets, fans may watch the big game on an outdoor LED screen on the Lawn at the Legends. Kickoff of the game is at 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
Family story time planned
Family story time is planned from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 1, at the youth services craft room, Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. There will be reading, dancing and singing. The story time is geared to children ages 2 to 6. For other library activities, visit www.kckpl.org.
STEM program planned at library
A STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) program is planned from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at the craft room of the Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. This month, the program will be about free recording software. Kids can get hands-on experience recording their own voices, applying effects and editing their recording. Space is limited. Basic computer skills are required. Participants should bring a flash drive if they want to take their work home with them. The program is for children and teens. Children’s art and reading program planned
A “Paint the Pages: Coretta Scott King Edition” program is planned from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at the South Branch Library, 3104 Strong Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Children will hear a story, “The Stuff of Stars,” by Marion Dane Bauer and illustrated by Ekua Holmes, and “Thank You, Omu!” written and illustrated by Oge Mora. Children will create a collage-style pictured inspired by these books, which were 2019 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award winners.
Annual Black History Banquet to be Feb. 1
The Unified Government Black History Committee will hold the 28th Annual Black History and Scholarship Banquet on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Memorial Hall, 600 N. 7th St. Trafficway in Kansas City, Kansas. The two-hour banquet starts at 6 p.m. with a social hour beginning at 5 p.m. This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Carla Pratt, dean and professor of law at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. Prior to joining Washburn Law, Dean Pratt served as associate dean for diversity and inclusion at Penn State’s Dickinson School of Law where she was the Nancy J. LaMont Faculty Scholar and Professor of Law. Dean Pratt has taught courses in constitutional law, federal Indian law, education law, and Race and American law. She will address this year’s theme, “The Color of Justice.” In addition to the keynote speaker, this year there will be a special Legendary Lifetime Achievement Award presented in recognition of outstanding professionalism and overcoming barriers. Also, one of Strawberry Hill’s small businesses that have been in the community for more than 10 years will be recognized. The main highlight and purpose of the event is the recognition of local colleges and check presentation in support of promising students who have a desire to pursue post-secondary education. The public is invited to support students, celebrate its heritage, culture, and accomplishments during the annual Black History and Scholarship program. Scholarship dinner and fundraiser to be Feb. 1
The Vincente Valdivieso Scholarship Taco Dinner and Bingo fundraiser will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Davern Hall, 3024 N. 53rd St., Kansas City, Kansas. The cost of the dinner will be $5 for adults, and $3.50 for kids, and includes dessert and a bingo card.
