Schools cancel classes
Some area schools are canceling classes with extreme wind chill readings in Thursday’s forecast.
Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools have canceled school for Thursday, Feb. 13, because of the weather.
Also closed because of the extremely cold weather and slick roads on Thursday are the Piper Public Schools.
The Bonner Springs-Edwardsville Public Schools have no classes scheduled for kindergarten through 12t grade on Thursday, Feb. 13, and Friday, Feb. 14. Parent-teacher conferences are this week. There was no school for elementary students on Wednesday.
The Kansas City, Kansas, Public Libraries will be closed on Thursday because of the weather.
Kansas City Kansas Community College will have a delayed start at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 13. All classes and events at 9:30 a.m. or after will proceed as scheduled.
The Turner Public Schools also have canceled classes on Thursday, Feb. 13, because of the inclement weather. However, scheduled parent-teacher conferences in Turner still will be held Thursday.
Public hearing on UG budget, vote on Reardon Center project scheduled Thursday
A public hearing on the Unified Government budget and the downtown Reardon Center redevelopment project are on the agenda for the 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, UG Commission meeting.
The meeting will be held at the Commission Chambers, lobby level, City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kansas.
During the public hearing, residents may comment on UG budget priorities and the Community Development action plan.
The UG Commission is expected to discuss the budget later, during workshops, with the budget being adopted in the summer. Community comments could influence budget decisions. The administrator has not yet presented a proposed budget.
Also to be considered at the Feb. 12 UG meeting are resolutions to set a public hearing on a downtown campus development agreement.
Proposed to be built at the site of the Reardon Center at 5th and Minnesota, under the proposal, are a four-story mixed-use retail and residential building with 70 to 85 market-rate apartment units, a 6,000-square–foot fitness center, and a 10,000-square-foot retail and commercial area. Lanier United is the developer.
The project also includes a multi-purpose meeting space of about 11,000 square feet. A recreational athletic field at 6th and Nebraska also is included in the redevelopment project.
A public hearing on the downtown redevelopment project is proposed for March 26.
The UG Commission also will meet at 5 p.m. in the fifth-floor conference room at City Hall for a solid waste study update, followed by a SOAR update.
Also on the 7 p.m. agenda for Feb. 13:
• Acceptance of a $100,000 grant from Major League Baseball, Youth Development Foundation, in addition to $50,000 from Royals Charities, to be used to renovate City Park Baseball Field No. 3, at Park Drive and South 26th Street in Kansas City, Kansas.
• Appointment of a committee to oversee ballot destruction of ballots that no longer need to be retained;
• A report on UG Commission travel and community event expenses;
• An amendment to the benefit district policy;
• Acceptance of a plat of the Garfield Residence, Garfield and North 35th Street.
• A resolution authorizing the sale of general obligation municipal temporary notes in the amount of about $50.7 million. Such items as bridge repairs, the police tow lot, Leavenworth Road project, the I-70 and Turner Diagonal interchange project and the Wolcott water pollution treatment plant expansion project are on the list. A full list of projects is on the agenda.
• A resolution authorizing the issuance of city general obligation improvement bonds and authorizing the sale of city general obligation improvement bonds estimated at $46.6 million. Some of the projects listed include pavement repairs, the Hutton Road fire station, Memorial Hall heating and cooling system, urban renewal demolition, the downtown grocery store, Piper Creek interceptor, Strong Avenue levee pump station flood control, Kansas levee improvements and Kaw River Bank stabilization at Turkey Creek.
