Vandalism reported to John Brown statue in KCK

Vandalism has been reported at the John Brown statue near 27th and Sewell in Kansas City, Kansas.

A police spokesman stated that officers went to 27th and Sewell around 2 p.m. March 18 to investigate reports of criminal damage to the historic statue.

Officers found an unknown person had written several racial slurs and hate symbols on the statue with a black marker, the police spokesman stated.

Officers photographed the vandalism to the statue and completed an incident supplement.

Public high schools have new start and end times today

A new school start and end time went into effect today for high schools in the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools district.

The school day was lengthened slightly, a total of 12 minutes, to make up for schools being closed four days this winter because of snow and ice.

The days were lengthened slightly to reach a minimum number of hours required by the state law for high school students to be in class, according to a news release from the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools.

Five minutes were added to the start of the day and seven minutes were added to the afternoon school day end time for high school students.

Harmon, Schlagle, Washington and Wyandotte high schools will begin at 7:20 a.m. with dismissal time at 2:27 p.m. The Wednesday dismissal time will be 12:27 p.m.

Sumner Academy’s start time will be 8:05 a.m., with the new dismissal time 3:12 p.m. The new dismissal time on Wednesday afternoons will be 1:12 p.m.

Bus schedules are changing to accommodate the new start and ending times.

Victim of homicide at 18th and Parallel identified

Kansas City, Kansas, police have identified the victim of a homicide on March 17 in the 1800 block of Parallel Parkway.

The victim was identified as Michael L. Williams Jr., 35, a resident of Kansas City, Missouri, police said.

When officers arrived at the Firelight Lounge near 18th and Parallel, they found a man in his 30s dead from an apparent gunshot wound, according to a police spokesman. The man was inside of the business, police said.
