Forecast: Today’s high in the 50s

The weather forecast today from the National Weather Service calls for a high of 52 degrees and sunny skies in Wyandotte County, according to the National Weather Service.

It will be just a little cooler than Wednesday, when temperatures reached 60 here.

A cold front passed through the area on Wednesday, and today will have ongoing gusty winds throughout the day behind the front, the weather service said. A north northwest wind of 7 to 14 mph will gust as high as 24 mph.

The weather service also said that this will mean an elevated fire weather danger across eastern Kansas and western Missouri as the dry air mass continues into the area from the north.

Overnight lows will return to the sub-freezing level with temperatures dipping into the mid to upper 20s as surface winds remain in place out of the north, according to the weather service.

Expect temperatures to warm up a little in the next few days.

There is a chance for thunderstorms Sunday night; however, severe weather is not expected at this time, the weather service said.

Tonight’s forecast is mostly clear with a low of 28, according to the weather service. A north wind of 5 to 7 mph will become light and variable.

Friday, it will be sunny with a high near 56, the weather service said, with a south southeast wind of 5 to 13 mph.

Friday night, the low will be around 37 with a southeast wind of 10 mph, according to the weather service.

Saturday, expect sunny skies and a high near 61, the weather service said. A south wind of 10 to 16 mph will gust as high as 25 mph.

Saturday night, it will be partly cloudy with a low of 43, according to the weather service.

Sunday, the high will be near 61 with partly sunny skies, the weather service said.

Sunday night, the low will be around 43 with an 80 percent chance of precipitation, according to the weather service.

Monday, expect a 30 percent chance of rain before noon, with a high near 51, the weather service said.

Monday night, the low will be around 31, with blustery winds, according to the weather service.

The Schlagle Lady Stallions kicked off the 2018 KSHSAA 5A playoffs with a convincing 65-49 win at home over Topeka’s Shawnee Heights.

Although Schlagle jumped to an early 6-1 lead, the first half was nearly a draw. The Thunderbirds’ defense limited the effectiveness of Schlagle’s dribble penetration, while Schlagle held Shawnee Heights sharpshooter Lydia Ostenson in check on 1-for-7 three point shooting. The half ended with Schlagle up 28-24.

In the second half, Schlagle worked through post players Kenaja Green and Tylieea Wallce to find opportunities inside and outside the arc. The Stallions’ defense forced turnovers and gave up only four made baskets in the quarter to open up the lead. Schlagle ended the third quarter ahead 15 points.

In the fourth quarter, Ostenson made a brave effort at a comeback, scoring 13 points and driving the Thunderbirds’ offense faster. However, Schlagle held the line and closed out the game with little worry.

Ishante Suttington led the Lady Stallions with 22 points, including 3-for-7 shooting from three-point range. Green scored 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

Schlagle will play Topeka’s Highland Park at home at 6 p.m. Saturday in the substate final.
