The Wyandotte County Fair will open on Tuesday evening with Veterans and Military Appreciation Night.
Gates will open at 5 p.m. Tuesday, with closing time at 11 p.m. The fair runs from Tuesday, July 12, through Saturday, July 16. And the weather looks good for the fair on Tuesday evening, with Tuesday’s high predicted to be 86.
On Tuesday night, a color guard and honor guard will conduct a ceremony at 7 p.m.
The host of the evening will be the VFW Post 11499 of Basehor and the VFW Post 6401, with support from other area VFW posts.
Musical performances on Tuesday
Performing at the Main Stage from 6:15 p.m. to 10:45 p.m. Tuesday will be The Highway. A four-piece classic country band, The Highway features a high energy performance with lots of guitar and vocals.
Performing at the Shade Pavilion at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Tuesday will be Damien Gunn. A country rock band, Damien Gunn has raised more than $31,000 for Operation: Fill the Boot, which supports veteran organizations. Damien Gunn has recorded four albums and performed with high-profile artists.

Gates to the fairgrounds open at 5 p.m., and parking is $5 per car. There is a $5 admission charge per person, with kids 12 and under free. Parking and admission are cash only.
The $5 per person fee includes admission to the Main Stage, Shade Pavilion and Rodeo Arena, as well as no additional charge to see 4-H exhibits, open exhibits, animals entered in the fair and visit booths and concessions.
This year’s activities throughout the fair include 4-H displays, a carnival, helicopter rides, a market place and a food fair featuring local cuisine.
On Saturday, a rodeo returns to the fairgrounds from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Rodeo Arena.
More Tuesday evening events at the fair
A carnival will be open from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday. Carnival rides will be a separate charge, with a $30 charge Tuesday for wristbands for all rides on Wristband Night. Individually, a ride ticket is $1 each, with the number of tickets required varying for different rides.
The Red Barn, which has 4-H and open class exhibits, will be open from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday. There is no additional charge to see these exhibits.
The 4-H sheep show will be at 5:30 p.m. and the goat show is scheduled at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the Show Barn, according to the Wyandotte County Fair Book. There is no additional charge to attend these shows.
New plan in place for routes to drive to the county fair
This year, there is a new traffic control plan, in conjunction with law enforcement, to get to the fairgrounds at 13700 Polfer Road, Kansas City, Kansas, according to the fair’s website. Drivers will take K-7 highway, and will turn east on Marxen Road to the next intersection, which is 131st Street. Then they will turn right, or south, on 131st Street to Polfer Road. Next, they will turn right or west on Polfer Road to enter the fairgrounds.
Once inside the fairgrounds, drivers will see a new lane past Gate 1, which opens to three lanes to the parking area.
