Sumner Academy of Arts and Science, a magnet school at 1610 N. 8th St. in Kansas City, Kansas, was named the best high school in Kansas by U.S. News and World Report.
Sumner Academy also was ranked No. 50 in high schools in the United States, according to the website, https://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/kansas/rankings.
The annual U.S. News and World Report rankings said Sumner Academy students had a 91.8 rating on college readiness. The school, with 758 students enrolled, has a 100 percent graduation rate, the website reported.
The U.S. News and World ranking report stated: “Students have the opportunity to take International Baccalaureate coursework and exams. The IB participation rate at Sumner Academy of Arts and Science is 99%. The total minority enrollment is 89%, and 78% of students are economically disadvantaged.”
Although schools in the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools District and in Kansas are currently closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, students are continuing their work at home.
Second place in Kansas went to Shawnee Mission East High School, Prairie Village, Kansas, and third place to Blue Valley High School in Stilwell, Kansas.
