A Schlagle High School student was honored at Tuesday night’s Kansas City, Kansas, Board of Education meeting for his quick action in responding to a medical emergency.
Alan Eduardo Hernandez, a senior at Schlagle, was named high school student of the month for the school district for his emergency efforts.
Hernandez’s career goal is to become a paramedic and he has been taking classes at Schlagle and also is taking an emergency medical responder class at Kansas City Kansas Community College.
When a teacher at Schlagle had a medical emergency recently, Hernandez was in the area, took control of the situation and gave emergency aid to the teacher until help arrived, according to Dr. Jermaine Wilson, executive director of student services and family support, who presented the award.
Although Hernandez has only just begun the emergency medical responder class, he was able to take what he learned, and make the situation better for the teacher and the students in the area, according to Wilson.
Hernandez was nominated for the award by David Herrington, a college and career facilitator, who commented that he is an example of what they want from all the young people in the school district.
