Renaissance Festival opens with pirates and mermaids
Pirates and mermaids can be found at the opening weekend of the Kansas City Renaissance Festival on Saturday, Aug. 31, at 130th and State Avenue, Bonner Springs. The festival is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sundays, as well as Labor Day. Tickets are $22.95 for adults and $13.95 for children 5 to 12 years old. This weekend’s theme is “Swashbucklers and Sirens.” Those who bring five cans of food to the Renaissance Festival gate to donate to Harvesters will receive “buy one, get one” festival admission tickets. Zoot Suit Festival planned Saturday
The Kansas City Zoot Suit Festival is planned from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at Memorial Hall 600 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kansas. The festival will include music and dancing from the 1940s and 1950s. Also, a vintage car show is planned. Food vendors will be present. Family story time planned
Family story time is planned from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 31, at the youth services craft room at the Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The event includes stories, dance and singing. The program is geared to ages 2 to 6.

African-American Book Club to meet
The African-American Book Club will meet from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at the first floor program room, Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The book to be discussed this month is “Forged in Desire” by Brenda Jackson.

Neon colors to be part of craft program
Children and teens may learn about the history of henna in an interactive lesson from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at the craft room, Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave. Participants will view a short presentation, then have the opportunity to create their own design using neon colors. Real henna past will not be used for this program. The program is for ages 8 to 19.

T-Bones take on Explorers

Two teams who want to make it to the Western Conference playoffs will square off Saturday when Sporting Kansas City (9-11-7, 34 points) plays host to rival Houston Dynamo (9-14-4, 31 points) at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas.
