A new Menards home improvement store is on the drawing board for an area west of the Schlitterbahn water park.
Zoning for the new store is on the Unified Government Commission meeting agenda at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 1 at City Hall, Commission Chambers, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kansas. The existing agricultural zoning would be changed to a planned general business district.
The 210,754-square-foot retail store is on almost 30 acres of land, according to the UG planning documents in the agenda. The address listed, 1301 N. 98th St., is east of Village West and I-435, near 98th and State Avenue. To the north is the Dairy Farmers of America building.
According to agenda information, there will be a retail store, outdoor landscape and garden area, a lumber warehouse, outdoor sidewalks connecting to 98th Street and a multi-purpose trail behind the property.
About 200 new jobs are expected to be created, not including local construction jobs to build the store, according to agenda information.

We have been hearing about and looking forward to a Menard store in KCK. Is there any progress being made on that? Is it or isn’t it being built and where it was planned. We hear all kinds of gossip on that store and whether the K Mart building has been sold and to whom.
Also, of concern, is whether any businesses are being “courted” to fill the closed stores at The Legends, particularly the North part. KCK could certainly support a Hobby Lobby or a Joann’s in the old Best Buy building. We have no other stores that home hobbyists have much of a selection of and the closest Hobby Lobby has moved out to 95th Street. Our Super Walmart craft and fabric department is not sufficient for sewing or craft enthusiasts.
I will boycott Hobby Lobby and fight any of my taxes giving them breaks
Not a problem. How about courting Joann’s Fabric & Hobbies then? That’s even better than Hobby Lobby.
The rent at The Legends is ridiculous. They seem to prefer empty spaces rather than having rent companies can afford. A Hobby Lobby would be good but they probably can’t afford the rent either. So the spaces might stay empty for quite some time.
Waterside and Plaza Speedway Shops have spaces available for it and others like Field and Stream or Academy Sports and Outdoors and Sierra Trading Post.
I do agree that a fabric and craft business has long been needed in Wyandotte County! To live in a metropolitan area that you have to travel 10 miles north or south to buy a spool of thread or a zipper is ridiculous. Also, a HyVee grocery store would be welcome too. Religious or political opinions about patronage should be made as an individual and not imposed on other people that may not share your personal beliefs.
