KCK student to receive college-sponsored National Merit scholarship

John K. Childress, Kansas City, Kansas, recently was named the recipient of a college-sponsored National Merit scholarship.

Childress will receive the National Merit W. Harold Otto Scholarship at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, according to the announcement.

Childress plans to go into the mathematics field, and attended St. James Academy, Lenexa.

More than 4,000 students nationwide are receiving college-sponsored National Merit scholarships.

The scholarship winners were selected from among finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. College-sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study.

There are more than 7,500 National Merit Scholars in 2018, who will receive scholarships for undergraduate study. There were also 2,500 National Merit $2,500 scholarships and 1,000 corporate-sponsored scholarships awarded.
