Legends tree lighting Saturday

The Legendary Tree Lighting will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at The Legends Outlets Shopping Center. The synchronized music and light show will take place at the 45-foot tree at the center courtyard, and live music with Mr. Stinky Feet and The Hiccups. The tree lighting event includes activities such as face painting, prize giveaways, a movie on the lawn, “Grinch,” Santa’s mailbox, costumed characters, hot chocolate and hot cider, and photos with Santa. Cold front moves in today

A strong cold front will move into the region today, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures will rise to almost 73 by noon, then fall to about 56 during the rest of the day, the weather service said.

A few strong storms are possible, with damaging winds.

Colder temperatures are behind the front, Thursday night into Friday and Saturday, with highs in the 30s on Friday.

Today, showers and thunderstorms are possible before 5 p.m., then showers are likely, the weather service said. Temperatures will rise to near 73 by noon, then fall to around 56 by the remainder of the day. A south southwest wind of 11 to 18 mph will become north northwest in the afternoon, with winds gusting up to 34 mph. Less than a tenth of an inch of rain is expected.

Tonight, there is a chance of showers and thunderstorms before 9 p.m., then a chance of showers between 9 p.m. and midnight. The low will be about 27.

On Friday, Veterans Day, it will be sunny, with a high near 37, the weather service said. A north northwest wind of 11 to 15 mph will gust as high as 24 mph.

Officer-involved shooting reported in 2700 block of Wood

One person is dead after an overnight officer-involved shooting in Kansas City, Kansas, according to a spokesman for the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

Officers with the police department were investigating a stolen vehicle in the 2700 block of Wood shortly after midnight when they encountered a suspicious vehicle parked in the area, the spokesman stated.

Upon inspection they saw a single occupant, an adult white male unresponsive with drug paraphernalia and a handgun, according to the spokesman.

Officers with protective shields tried to make contact with the individual, who then opened fire on them, the spokesman stated.

Officers returned fire and retreated, according to the spokesman.

The KCK police special operations unit then determined the individual was deceased, according to the spokesman.

Detectives with the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department and the Wyandotte County District Attorney’s office are investigating.
