A scoreless first quarter turned into a rout by the closing whistle, with the Piper Pirates notching a 46-6 defeat of the Golden Tornado from Coffeyville’s Field Kindley High School in the first round of the KSHSAA 4A football playoffs.

Six different players scored the seven Piper touchdowns, the first a 37-yard run up the middle by Miguel Martin two minutes into the second quarter.

Piper shut down a Coffeyville fake punt on the next possession to get a short field, starting at the Golden Tornado 36-yard line. A long completion from Blake Porter to Divante Herrig-Brittian nearly made the end zone, but the receiver was knocked out of bounds. Mason L’Heureux ran the ball in from 2 yards out on the next play, and Porter followed it up with a 2-point conversion run.

Divante Herrig-Brittian returned an interception 56 yards to the end zone on the next Coffeyville possession for a 20-0 advantage going into halftime.

Out of the break, Piper took advantage of a short kick to start at midfield. A 47-yard run by Dominique Herrig-Brittian put them at the Golden Tornado 3-yard line, and two plays later Porter hit Ethan Walker in the end zone for a 26-0 lead.

On the next drive, Evan Damron stripped the ball from Coffeyville quarterback Zac Becker, giving the Pirates another short field from the Field Kindley 23. Becker was injured on the play, forcing running back Amanie Luten into the quarterback role.

Porter completed a 23-yard touchdown pass to Divante Herrig-Brittian, and kicker Zane Busick hit the extra point for a 33-0 lead.

Luten kept the next Coffeyville drive going with some impressive runs from the quarterback position, but tossed an interception to TiwJaun Griffin at the Piper 7-yard line to end the drive.

An illegal procedure penalty pushed the Pirates back to their own 3-yard line, setting the stage for Gannon Roth’s 97-yard touchdown pass to Dominique Herrig-Brittian on the next play.

The following Golden Tornado drive ended with Luten sacked and the ball turned over to the Pirates on downs at the Coffeyville 39. Roth hit Tannar McDaniel for an 18-yard touchdown pass, and Busick converted for a 46-0 lead.

The Golden Tornado got off zero in the final minute when Amir Luten made a long catch and run to the end zone.

The win sets up a rematch between the Piper Pirates and the Paola Panthers in the regional round of the 4A playoffs. The game will be played in Paola on Friday, Nov. 5, starting at 7 p.m.

Both teams are 6-3 following their first-round victories. Paola defeated Piper 24-19 in the Oct. 8 Frontier League match played in Paola.

Schlagle got in a few blows, but was eventually overwhelmed 51-22 by the Atchison Phoenix Friday night at F.L. Schlagle Stadium. Schlagle senior Gedeon Ngenzirabona made the highlight reel with two touchdown catches and multiple tackles on defense and special teams.

Schlagle scored on the first play from scrimmage on a reverse that Kameron Daboe took up the left sideline for 75 yards.

On the following drive, Schlagle made a goal-line stand against the Phoenix, with Elonnie Fishback breaking up a fourth down Atchison pass to the end zone. The Stallions got the ball back at their own 6-yard line, but quarterback Kahliek Rainey was tackled in the end zone for an Atchison safety.

Atchison took a 9-6 lead later in the quarter on a 4-yard run from Jesse Greenly, following his own 25-yard run that set up the score. Greenly’s powerful running was a challenge for Schlagle all night, and the Atchison junior reliably picked up yards after contact on each run.

Schlagle took another short-lived lead in the second quarter on a 69-yard pass from Rainey to Ngenzirabona. The senior receiver got past Atchison’s secondary on the left boundary and won the footrace to the goal line. Rainey ran in the 2-point conversion to give the home team a 14-9 lead.

The celebration quickly quieted when Atchison’s Dameon Owens slipped two tackles on the kickoff and headed to the end zone.

Atchison scored again late in the second quarter to give the Phoenix a 23-14 halftime lead.

The third quarter belonged entirely to the visitors, who scored four unanswered touchdowns to put the game out of reach at 51-14. The Schlagle offense got little traction, with Rainey often running for his life behind the line.

With the clock running late in the fourth quarter, Rainey connected again with Ngenzirabona from 25 yards out. The Schlagle receiver was tackled near the goal line but dived to slip the ball just across the pylon for the touchdown. A 2-point pass conversion sealed the final score.

Schlagle remains winless in a rebuilding year for the program. The Stallions will wrap up their season at home next Friday against Wyandotte starting at 7 p.m.

KCK school board changes academic eligibility requirements for athletes

The Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools Board of Education amended the athletic eligibility policy on Tuesday night.

The Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools Board of Education voted 5-2 on Tuesday night to approve changes to academic eligibility requirements for athletes and for students involved in activities.

The new policy amendment calls for athletes who are failing or whose grades are below a C average to have a student support plan in place at their school in order to practice or play. The students who do not follow their student support plan would not be allowed to practice or play, according to the policy.

The plan calls for students to attend after-school tutoring for 30 minutes before they go to practice. Also, weekly grade checks are part of the program.

Those students who do not participate in the student support plan would not be allowed to practice or play, according to the policy.

School board members discussed whether or not the students would be required to bring their grades up within a certain time period, such as two or four weeks.

Board member Dr. Valdenia Winn, who voted against the policy change, said an end time was not clearly stated in the written policy. Dr. Winn said there were internal contradictions in the policy.

She said she was for a policy with more accountability.

Tammie Romstad, the district’s athletic director, said if students who need to bring up their grades do not make an appointment to work with their teachers the next week, they would not get to play.

Romstad said she surveyed districts in Wyandotte County, and that other districts did not have any eligibility policies different from Kansas State High School Athletic Association on their websites. The KCK district had stricter eligibility guidelines than KSHSAA. The KSHSAA guidelines are measured by grades at semester, according to officials.

Romstad said she was a proponent of setting higher standards. However, there has been a difference in getting assignments done and graded, caused by quarantines, she said.

She said the athletic directors at schools would be sending her weekly reports on grades, and she would review them. If the student support plan for each individual wasn’t working, it would be modified, she said.

Stephen Linkous, chief of staff, said they went to weekly grade checks two years ago, and the students’ grades greatly improved, prior to COVID.

“This does bring a positive push to keep students engaged,” Linkous said.

Dr. Stacy Yeager, a board member, supported the change in eligibility policy.

“Students and coaches are doing everything possible to do the best they can do,” Dr. Yeager said.

Parents are telling board members to give them policies similar to their counterparts, Dr. Yeager said.

Board Vice President Yolanda Clark said a lot of kids need their coaches, and when they remove students from the coaches, they set them up to fail.

Board member Wanda Paige said students should be required to keep their grades up in order to play, and that federal funds are available to help athletes with mental health counseling.

She suggested making mental health counseling a part of the SSP program, “because something is obviously wrong.” However, the board did not amend it to add mental health counseling.

Voting yes for the eligibility policy change were Yolanda Clark, Maxine Drew, Janey Humphries, Randy Lopez and Stacy Yeager. Voting no were Wanda Paige and Valdenia Winn.

The issue also was voted upon in September, with a similar result. It was a “third reading” for the policy.
