Renaissance Festival kicks off today

The 45th annual Kansas City Renaissance Festival begins Saturday, Sept. 3, at the festival grounds, near 126th and State Avenue, Bonner Springs.

The theme of opening weekend is “Swashbucklers and Sirens.”

The festival is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 5, Labor Day.

The festival is open on weekends through Oct. 16.

New to the festival this year are the Captain’s Rum Raid and Henry’s Happy Hour at the White Stag Inn.

Tickets may be purchased at the box office or online at www.kcrenfest.com.

Coupons are available at the City Market on Saturday, Casey’s, Minsky’s, Half Price Books and Culver’s.

Central Avenue Parade to be Saturday

The annual Central Avenue Parade will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, along Park Drive from 19th Street to 11th Street in Kansas City, Kansas. The parade will end at Bethany Park at 11th and Central. The event is sponsored by the Central Avenue Betterment Association. The theme for the 45th annual Central Avenue Dotteversity Parade is “We Believe in Building Our Own Future.” This year’s event will include a performance by high school bands in Wyandotte County. After they complete the parade, the bands will give performances at Bethany Park. The event will include entertainment, food vendors and games in conjunction with La Placita Market at Bethany Park. Monarchs competing for West Division

The Kansas City Monarchs, in second place of the West Division of the American Association, are playing the first-place team tonight at Legends Field in Kansas City, Kansas. The Monarchs and Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks will play at 6 p.m. Saturday at Legends Field. The RedHawks won last night. The RedHawks will clinch the division crown with one more win while the Monarchs will need to win the last three games to claim their third regular season division title in a row. The Monarchs already have secured their playoff invitation. This will be the last regular season homestand for the Monarchs.
