Free haircuts for kids offered Sept. 28

Free haircuts for students in kindergarten through 12th grade will be offered from noon to 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28 at the One Touch Building Maintenance Office Building, 221 N. 18th St., Kansas City, Kansas.

Up to 150 kindergarten through 12th grade students who attend a Wyandotte County school may receive a free haircut, according to a spokesman.

The event next month is sponsored by the Jegna Klub and Purple Label Barbershop.

Students will get a free haircut from a licensed barber, and there will be food, a hygiene pack and shoe giveaways.

Moses Wyatt Jr., a teacher at Grant Elementary School who is the CEO of the Jegna Klub, said the event will help youth know that there are people in the community who care for them. A new haircut may help the youth feel better about themselves.

“We’re looking to provide some self-esteem, some haircuts for community youth,” Wyatt said. That may have a positive effect on their development and educational success.

There is a shoe drive going on now, with new and lightly used shoes being collected at five stores, to be given away at this event, he added.

“It’s a trying time, a lot of people lost jobs, we’re just trying to provide some help,” he said.

Participating barbers include Purple Label and Surrcutts.

Community partners in the project include One Touch Building Maintenance, Open Arms, Initial, DVA%, Reset KC, Gallery by Volume 1ne, Taste of Flavor Popcorn, Bridge of Hope and Helping Hands.
