Three Wyandotte County students initiated into Phi Kappa Phi at K-State

Three Wyandotte County students have been initiated into the Phi Kappa Phi collegiate honor society at Kansas State University.

The three students are Margaret Banach, Kansas City, Kansas; Tamesha Taylor, Kansas City, Kansas; and Cheryl Zelle, Edwardsville, Kansas.

Members of Phi Kappa Phi are nominated by the local chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of candidates for graduate degrees also may qualify.

KCK schools receive challenge awards for student achievement

The Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools have been named as a recipient of the 2017 Challenge Awards by the Confidence in Kansas Public Education Task Force.

The awards recognize Kansas schools that are making a notable difference in student achievement despite facing significant challenges in their school population.

Since its inception in 2002, more than 1,500 awards have been presented to schools across the state.

Award winners in Wyandotte County include:

Fourth-grade math:
Emerson Elementary School, Kansas City USD 500.
John Fiske Elementary School, Kansas City USD 500.

Fifth-grade math:
Emerson Elementary School, Kansas City USD 500.

Eighth-grade math:
Argentine Middle School, Kansas City USD 500.
Coronado Middle School, Kansas City USD 500.
Sumner Academy of Arts and Science, Kansas City USD 500.

Fourth-grade reading:
New Stanley Elementary School, Kansas City USD 500.

Fifth-grade reading:
Noble Prentis Elementary School, Kansas City USD 500.

Eighth-grade reading:
Sumner Academy of Arts and Science, Kansas City USD 500.

Tenth-grade reading:
Sumner Academy of Arts and Science, Kansas City USD 500.

KCKPS Welcome Center closed on Friday, April 20

The Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools Welcome Center will be closed on Friday, April 20, as school is also not in session that day. The KCKPS Welcome Center will reopen on Monday, April 23.

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools Welcome Center is at the Central Office, 2010 N. 59th St., and serves as location for new students and their families to enroll their children in school.

The Welcome Center is not for online re-enrollment, Kindergarten Roundup, Sumner Academy enrollment or preschool enrollment.
