Chief justice to give state of Kansas judiciary address Jan. 11

Chief Justice Marla Luckert will give her 2023 State of the Kansas Judiciary address to a joint session of the Legislature at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, in the House chamber of the Statehouse.

Luckert will update Gov. Laura Kelly and members of the House and Senate—as well as the public—on the current state of Kansas’ court system and its role providing important services to people and businesses in communities statewide.

The Legislature will convene at 1:15 p.m. with the address scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.

There will also be a live audio stream on the Kansas Legislature website at http://kslegislature.org/li/. The link to the live audio stream is through the Audio/Video heading at the top of the Kansas Legislature home page. Municipal Court to close Thursday and Friday

The Unified Government has announced that Municipal Court will close Thursday, Dec. 22 and possibly Friday, Dec. 23, because of the upcoming winter weather forecast.

Due to the anticipated severe weather conditions, the Kansas City, Kansas, Municipal Court will be closed Thursday, Dec. 22, and Friday, Dec. 23.

Any scheduled hearings will be continued; persons will receive notification in the mail of their new court date.

Payments can still be made by using the “My Wyco” App or by visiting the webpage at www.wycokck.org/municipal.

Also, for persons in jail, bonds can be posted at the jail; otherwise, bonds cannot be posted during this closure.

Suspect in 10th and Pacific homicide arrested and charged

A suspect in the Dec. 9 shooting death of Ali Alesani-Natvidad, 23, at 10th and Pacific Avenue has been arrested in Kansas City, Missouri, and charged in Wyandotte County.

According to a Kansas City, Kansas, police spokesman, Alvaro R. Lozano, 31, has been charged with first-degree murder and is currently being held in the Jackson County Jail on a $500,000 bond as he awaits extradition to Kansas.

Anyone with information on the case is urged to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS, police stated. All tips will remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward, according to police.
