Candidate forums to be Oct. 17, 18
Business West, in cooperation other neighborhood and business organizations and Kansas City Kansas Community College, will sponsor candidates’ forums from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, and Wednesday, Oct. 18, in the Upper Jewell building at the Community College. The candidates running for Mayor, Sheriff, Unified Government Commissioner and the Kansas City, Kansas, Board of Public Utilities will appear Tuesday, Oct. 17. Candidates running for the Community College Board of Trustees and the Kansas City, Kansas, Board of Education will appear Wednesday, Oct. 18. Candidates will present introductory remarks and then answer questions from a panel. The forums will be taped and replayed on Channel 17, the community college’s public access channel on the Spectrum system. The general election will be Tuesday, Nov. 7.

Women’s Chamber offers scholarship fundraising event Oct. 18
“Purses with a Purpose” will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, at the Kansas City Kansas Community College Tech Center, 6565 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Sponsored by the Kansas City, Kansas, Women’s Chamber of Commerce, the event features guest speaker, Danni Boatwright, a local business owner. There will be a silent auction and purses, accessories and other items for purchase, with proceeds going toward a scholarship fund for nontraditional women students in Kansas City.

Democrats to meet Saturday
A breakfast buffet and program is set for the Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast on Saturday morning, Oct. 21, at the Las Islas Marias, 7516 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The breakfast buffet will be available at 8 a.m., and the program is at 9 a.m. All candidates who are Democratic registered voters and are on the Nov. 7 ballot are invited to speak at this event. There is a time limit for each candidate. The program is open to all Democrats. The breakfast will cost $10, or $6 for students and those on limited incomes. Friends of Yates plans event Oct. 1 to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. A chicken rice casserole will be provided for the potluck dinner, with members and guests bringing other dishes to share. Awards will be presented to the winners in the 2017 LRA parade. The program will include a community policing update. Any candidate attending will be allowed two minutes to present a platform.

Wyandotte County Museum exhibit on the Underground Railroad continues

The Wyandotte County Museum, 631 N. 126th St., Bonner Springs, has a new exhibit on the Underground Railroad on display. “Through Darkness to Light” features photographs taken mostly at night of sites along the Underground Railroad. The exhibit runs through Oct. 10. There are companion artifacts from the pre-Civil War era here currently on display at the museum. The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
