Thrive and Drive planned May 19 in Bonner Springs

Thrive and Drive will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at the Farmers’ Market, 129 Elm St., in Bonner Springs, Kansas.

The day will honor first responders, service members and local farmers, according to Jack Granath, Bonner Springs City Library director.

Activities include a barbecue cookoff for fire, police, EMT and military members, a kids corner, art booths, live musical entertainment and a car show. Some cars in the show will be at the Farmers Market and some will be at Kobe’s.

Wyandotte County students graduate from KU

More than 100 Wyandotte County students who were candidates for degrees from the University of Kansas have been announced.

Letter carriers collecting canned goods today for needy
Letter carriers for the U.S. Postal Service will collect canned goods and nonperishable foods today for the needy in the Stamp Out Hunger drive. Residents are invited to fill a bag or any container with nonperishable food and leave it at the mailbox on May 12 for the letter carrier to pick up. The food will be taken to the Harvesters’ food bank for distribution to the needy. Residents also may drop off nonperishable food at a local post office or in the Harvesters’ barrels at area Price Chopper stores.

Bonner Springs Farmers’ Market continues Saturday
The Bonner Springs Farmers’ Market will be from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 12, at Kelly Murphy Park, 129 Elm, Bonner Springs. Music by Doug Kellis will be featured at the farmers’ market, according to Bonner Springs library officials. Shepherd’s Center continues Book and Bric-A-Brac sale May 12
The Shepherd’s Center of KCK will continue its 24th annual Book and Bric-A-Brac sale from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, at the First Baptist Church of Turner, 701 S. 55th, Kansas City, Kansas. In addition, church members will hold a $5 breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 12. Proceeds from the sale benefit the programs and services of the Shepherd’s Center of KCK, and proceeds from the breakfast will help the church provide summer camp fees for a young person. Cross-Lines schedules community picnic
Cross-Lines has scheduled a community picnic from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at 646 S. 7th St., Kansas City, Kansas. The event will include food, music, crafts, games and prizes, and those who live in the area are invited.

Youth Policy Debate to be Saturday
The WyCo Youth Policy Debate will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at Kansas City Kansas Community College, Upper Jewell building, 7250 State Ave. Sponsored annually by State Sen. David Haley, D-4th Dist., the annual debate is open to students attending Harmon, Schlagle, Washington and Wyandotte high schools, Sumner Academy and College Gateway program. It is the seventh annual event. Sen. Haley started the event in 2012 as a way to encourage political awareness and active citizenry in Wyandotte County youth. In the event, young adults will have an opportunity to think on their feet and be heard by a community audience about current events. The public may attend and watch the debates.

Alcott highlights graphic and romance novels at new exhibit
Local literary artists will be in the limelight on Saturday at the Alcott Arts Center, 180 S. 18th St., Kansas City, Kansas. The graphic novels, romance novels and novellas exhibition will include a reception from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 12. The exhibit will run through June 2. Authors and artists will talk about their works briefly at the reception. Authors and artists scheduled to appear include “Lil’ Guy” graphic novelists James C. Rider II, Michael Valverde, Chuck G. Smith and artists Gabe Smith and Finnley Smith, paranormal romance author Lonita Cook, novella author Jill Jackard, novelist E.M.
