Program planned Oct. 16 on immigration legislation
A program is planned Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library on immigration legislation. The program, “Climate of Fear: Pending Immigration Legislation, DACA and ICE,” will begin at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Main Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. To be discussed are pending immigration legislation in the United States and legislative trends in other countries that deal with refugees, as well as facts about U.S. immigration policies and proposed changes. A candidate forum is scheduled at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at the Upper Jewell building, Kansas City Kansas Community College, 7250 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Candidates for contested state representative positions and for District 1 of the Kansas Board of Education have been invited. The forum is sponsored by KCKCC, Business West and other neighborhood business revitalization groups. The forum is open to the public. There are plans to show the forum later on the college’s cable television station.
Vaughan to speak about book Oct. 19
Kansas City area author and historian Joe H. Vaughan will be speaking and signing books at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at the monthly Shepherd’s Center of Kansas City, Kansas, “Adventures in Learning” group at Grace Lutheran Church, 3333 Wood Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Vaughan has released a new history book entitled, “Colonel Wilkinson’s Diary, A Kansas Doctor in World War I”. Colonel Hugh Wilkinson, M. D., was born and raised in Seneca, Kansas. The doctor was a Kansas City, Kansas, surgeon whose offices were in the Brotherhood Building on Minnesota Avenue. Kelly, Davids scheduled to speak to Wyandotte County Democrats Saturday
Laura Kelly, Democratic candidate for governor, will be a guest speaker on Saturday morning, Oct. 20, at the Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast. Also speaking at the meeting will be Sharice Davids, the Democratic nominee for U.S. representative, 3rd District. The buffet breakfast will begin at 8:15 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at Las Islas Marias, 7516 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Medicare open enrollment assistance event to be Oct. 23
A Medicare open enrollment assistance event sponsored by Rep. Kevin Yoder, R-3rd Dist., is planned for 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Oct. 23, at the West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd St., Kansas City, Kansas. The event will provide help to seniors during the Medicare open enrollment period. Trained volunteers from the Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas (SHICK) program will be on hand at the event to provide one-on-one assistance to seniors who have questions, or who wish to make changes to their plans. The Medicare Open Enrollment Period extends from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7. Medicare beneficiaries who wish to make changes or enroll for the first time need to bring their Medicare card, any current prescriptions (including dosage and frequency), and a list of preferred pharmacies. The event is free and open to everyone. Blood drive planned Oct. 24
An American Red Cross blood drive is planned on Oct. 24 at Donnelly College, 608 N. 18th St., Kansas City, Kansas. Alcott to hold Halloween event
The Alcott Arts Center, 180 S. 18th St., is preparing for its annual Halloween event at the Alcott from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31. The theme this year is the “Wizard of Oz.” The Alcott parking lot on Oct. 31 will be decorated with scenes from the “Wizard of Oz.” Visitors will walk through the gates and follow a yellow brick road. Veterans Day Commemoration event to be Nov. 10
The annual Wyandotte County Veterans Day Commemoration event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Salvation Army Harbor Light Village, 6723 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas.
