KCKPS taking survey to name new school

The Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools district is taking a survey through 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, to name the new elementary school that will take the place of the combined White Church and Bethel elementary schools.

The survey offers five proposed school names, and also offers an opportunity to write in another name for the new school.

The five names are Bright Star Elementary, a combination of Bethel and White Church; Brune Elementary after Lowell Brune, who mentored students at the schools; Lane Elementary, for Dr. Cynthia Lane, superintendent; Legacy Elementary, acknowledging the students from both schools; and New Star Elementary, representing a new beginning.

The new school is scheduled to begin construction in fall 2018, and should be completed for the 2020-2021 school year. It is part of the zero-tax increase bond initiative.
