KCKCC men’s basketball upsets No. 2 JCCC, 77-65

Another big match for the Kansas City Kansas Community College men’s basketball team pitted them against No. 2 and undefeated Johnson County Community College Saturday afternoon inside the KCKCC Fieldhouse.

The game was tight from the beginning, but the Blue Devils held a comfortable lead down the stretch to upset the Cavaliers, 77-65.

The Blue Devils improve to 15-7 overall and 6-1 in the KJCCC.

KCKCC broke out on a 10-0 run to start the game, thanks to six points from Bradley Lightbourne.

The Blue Devils maintained the lead until the 8:48 mark of the first half as JCCC tied the score at 16-16. KCKCC held the lead late, though, and went up by two points at 34-32 at halftime.

The Blue Devils came out strong in the second half and found themselves up 47-36 after Caleb Jones drove the lane for a dunk. As it looked like the Cavaliers would make a comeback, the Blue Devils held their ground when Cortez Howlett and Shayon Janloo scored five points to give the team a 10-point lead. KCKCC never let its guard down late in the game and was able to come out with the 12-point win.

Lightbourne and Howlett each had 16 points to lead the team. Janloo scored 11 points and Jones added 10.


KCKCC returns to the court on Monday for a road game at Labette Community College at 7:30 p.m.

In a thrilling matchup the Kansas City Kansas Community College women’s basketball team found a way to upset the No. 1 Johnson County Community College Cavaliers Saturday afternoon inside the KCKCC Fieldhouse, 61-59 – giving the Cavaliers their first loss of the season.

The Blue Devils were poised the entire way as they move to 12-8 overall and 4-3 in the KJCCC.

KCKCC fell behind 10-2 to start the game, but maintained some momentum after Aysia Arrowood and Jennifer Guilbeaux scored the final five points of the quarter for the Blue Devils.

JCCC led 18-9 heading to the second period. Late in the second quarter, Trinity McDow and Arrowood connected on back-to-back shots and the Blue Devils climbed back, tying the game at 24-24.

The Cavaliers, however, were able to close out the half on an 8-0 run and led 32-24 at the break.


De’Jaria Guillroy and Ikia Elam gave the Blue Devils a jolt in the third quarter and fought back to make it 34-30 Cavaliers.

Lacy Whitcomb then sank a three-point shot and the deficit was down to one point. Whitcomb then scored the next eight points for the team and the Blue Devils found themselves up five points.

In the final quarter the Blue Devils led narrowly, but the Cavaliers did not go away as they tied the game at 57-57 after a three-point shot from Jaylen Townsend.

Guilbeaux scored the Blue Devils’ final four points and their defense buckled down to pull off the upset at 61-59 in the final seconds.

Whitcomb led the team with 18 points and nine rebounds. Arrowood scored 12 points and Guilbeaux added 11.

The Blue Devils return to the floor on Monday for a road game at Labette Community College at 5:30 p.m.

Lady Braves take a narrow home loss to Tonganoxie, 56-51

The Bonner Springs Lady Braves lost a close contest to the Tonganoxie Lady Chieftains 56-51 Friday evening in Bonner Springs. The home team kept within a possession for most of the game.

The Lady Braves offense capitalized on Mariyah Noel’s ability to drive and draw defenders, finishing at the rim or dishing to Wren VanCleave or McKenzie Campbell in the lane.

Corrie Hassett kept the Tonganoxie defense honest with timely outside baskets, including one to pull Bonner Springs within 3 points with two minutes left in the game after Tonganoxie extended its lead at the start of the fourth quarter.

On the Bonner Springs defensive end, Tonganoxie senior guard Raegan Seba was a tough match-up, scoring 17 points to pace the Lady Chieftains.

Noel and Hassett led the scoring for the Lady Braves with 13 points each. VanCleave contributed 10 and Campbell 8.

The Lady Braves have a home game coming up Monday against the tough 11-1 Lady Cardinals of Eudora. The game will start at 5:30 p.m.
