The Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools are dealing with the effects of Wednesday’s wind storms.

Also, last night’s storms affected Mark Twain Elementary School, according to a district social media post. Students at Twain Elementary were asked to walk to nearby Wyandotte High School until the issue is resolved, according to the post.
A smoky smell after wind storms Wednesday evening was most likely due to fires in central Kansas, according to forecasters, but there also was a grass fire on Wednesday on the east side of I-435.
According to Scott Schaunaman, a spokesman for the Kansas City, Kansas, Fire Department, the grass fire was on northbound I-435 between State and Parallel Parkway.
The fire was knocked down with an assist from Mother Nature, he said, as rainfall helped immensely. Crews then worked on putting out hot spots, he said.
Traffic in the area was not greatly affected, according to Schaunaman. At this time, the cause of the fire is unknown.
