Today’s heat index could reach 101; storms possible

Saturday’s heat index could reach 101 as temperatures hit a high of 95, according to the National Weather Service forecast. Storms are in the forecast late tonight and Sunday.

Look for the heat index to hit 100 around 2 p.m. Saturday, and about 101 at 4 p.m.

Hot weather also is in store on Monday and Tuesday, the weather service said.

Wyandotte County is on the edge of an area that may experience strong or isolated severe storms tonight and Sunday, the weather service said.

Strong winds are the main concern of this storm, according to the weather service. Storms also are possible Sunday and Sunday night, with wind, hail and heavy rain possible in areas.

With smoke from the western wildfires overspreading the region, today there is a moderate air quality index reading. Those who are sensitive to air pollution could be at risk.

Today, it will be mostly sunny with a high near 95, the weather service said, and heat index values as high as 101. A south wind of 10 to 16 mph will gust as high as 23 mph.

Tonight, there is a 20 percent chance of precipitation after 5 a.m. The low will be around 76 with a south wind of 10 to 14 mph, gusting as high as 18 mph, according to the weather service.

Sunday, there is a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 7 a.m., the weather service said. The high will be near 91 with a south southwest wind of 10 to 13 mph, gusting as high as 25 mph. Between a tenth and quarter-inch of rain is possible.

Sunday night, there is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 1 a.m., according to the weather service. The low will be around 75 with a south southwest wind around 10 mph, gusting as high as 20 mph. Between a tenth and quarter-inch of rain is possible.

Monday, it will be sunny, with a high near 96 and a south southwest wind of 11 mph, gusting as high as 18 mph, the weather service said.

Monday night, there is a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 a.m., with a low of 77, according to the weather service.

Tuesday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 95, the weather service said.

Tuesday night, there is a 50 percent chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 1 a.m., according to the weather service. The low will be around 75.

Wednesday, there is a 30 percent chance of showers after 1 p.m., with a high near 93, the weather service said.

Wednesday night, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 73, according to the weather service.

Back-to-School Fair to be Saturday, Aug. 7

The annual Back-to-School Fair will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools’ Central Office, 2010 N. 59th St., Kansas City, Kansas.

The annual event provides backpacks and supplies for all Wyandotte County schoolchildren. There is no cost to families and children that participate.

This year, the event will be a drive-through. Masks are required.

The free items will be available first-come, first-served to Wyandotte County children.

This year, there will be 2,400 backpacks available, filled with school supplies, courtesy of the Wyandotte County Back-to-School Fair Committee, along with new books donated by the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, hygiene kits courtesy of the Kansas City Kansas Community College and dental kits from Adventure Dental.

All support received is used to purchase backpacks and supplemental school supplies. Sponsors for this year’s Back-to-School Fair:

The location was changed to the school district offices near 59th and Parallel this year. Also, it will be a drive-through event, which is another change, due to COVID.

In addition, there will not be health screenings at the event this year.

Olmeda three-run homer puts Monarchs on top, 9-6

The Kansas City Monarchs (47-24) came from behind to beat the Cleburne Railroaders (39-31) by a score of 9-6, thanks to a three-run homer by catcher Alexis Olmeda.

Fresh out of Washburn, pitcher Brock Gilliam (2-0) got the win for the Monarchs after pitching for one inning and recording two strikeouts.

Jameson McGrane got the save when he pitched for two innings, recorded one hit with two walks and a strikeout.

Newcomer Ibandel Isabel kicked off the fun for Kansas City, hitting a two-run home run off his first-ever pitch as a Monarch, scoring himself and Casey Gillaspie.

Following the homer excitement, Will Kengor and Drew Ferguson each singled to get on base. Alexis Olmeda filled up the bases with a walk then a sacrifice fly by Morgan McCullough scored Kengor.

Charcer Burks followed McCullough with another sacrifice fly and ended up scoring Drew Ferguson, bringing the Monarchs up 4-0.

The Railroaders tied up the ballgame in the top of the fourth, thanks to a single by Chase Simpson and a three-run home run by Hunter Clanin.

Cleburne’s Chase Simpson hit a two-run home run, breaking the tie and taking the lead in the top of the sixth, 6-4.

Alexis Olmeda was fired up in the bottom of the seventh, hitting a three-run homer to pull ahead of the Railroaders.

McCullough hit a ground-rule double to keep the crowd on their feet, then Burks hit a single to center to bring McCullough home to put the Monarchs over the Railroaders 8-6.

Gaby Guerrero kept the momentum going in the bottom of the eighth, hitting a single, followed by Gillaspie walking to first. Ibandel Isabel then hit a single to draw Guerrero home from second base, making the final score 9-6.

The Kansas City Monarchs continue their series against the Cleburne Railroaders Friday night, first pitch is set for 7 p.m. with the gates opening at 6 p.m. The game will air on the Monarchs Broadcast Network with the pre-game beginning at 6:30 p.m., while the video stream airing on aabaseball.tv at first pitch.

Friday night is Disney Theme night, with Disney character appearances. There will be pre-game skydivers. The first 1,000 fans will receive a Monarchs drawstring bag.
