Ag Hall tractor show to be Saturday

A day-long Tractor Show will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 31, on the museum grounds at the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame, 630 N. 126th St., Bonner Springs, Kansas.

The day’s events include the Parade of Power at noon. Farmers will compete in Tractor Games, including a low-gear race, electric-start competition and a slow-forward race that will be won by the last tractor to cross the finish line. Young kids can test their “horsepower” in the Pedal Tractor Pull.

Families and other visitors can also tour the displays of antique tractors, combines and other farm implements while learning about America’s rich agricultural history.

Cost is $7 for adults and $5 for kids ages 5-12. Children under 5 are free.

The event is organized by the Two Pedal Tractor Club to benefit the National Agricultural Center.

Back-to-School Fair to be Aug. 7 at Central Office

A new location was announced for the Wyandotte County Back-to-School Fair on Saturday, Aug. 7.

The fair will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 7 at the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools Central Office, 2010 N. 59th St., Kansas City, Kansas.

Because of COVID-19 concerns and the new location, there have been changes made to the event, according to a spokesman.

At the Wyandotte County Back-to-School Fair, Wyandotte County students receive school supplies, backpacks, immunizations, health screenings and other community resources at no cost.

Details about this year’s event

One of the key objectives of the Back-to-School Fair is to provide students with a variety of health-related screenings and services prior to going back to school.

At this year’s Back-to-School Fair, students can get the medical services inside the facility. Medical services that will be provided on a first come, first-served basis include:

• Sports physicals and school physicals, provided by the University of Kansas Medical Center Department of Family Medicine
• COVID-19 vaccinations for students 12 and over provided by the Unified Government Public Health Department
• School immunizations for students of all ages, also provided by the Unified Government Public Health Department
• Vision screenings provided by the Kansas City Downtown Lion’s Club
• Dental and vision screenings provided by Adventure Dental

Items that are available for free while supplies last from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. to Wyandotte County students only:

• 2,400 backpacks filled with school supplies, courtesy of the Wyandotte County Back-to-School Fair Committee
• New books donated by the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library system
• Hygiene kits courtesy of the Kansas City Kansas Community College
• Dental kits provided by Adventure Dental

The Wyandotte County Back-to-School Fair Planning Committee is composed of volunteers from various nonprofit and for-profit entities that work together to raise funds and coordinate the activities of the fair.

All support received is used to purchase backpacks and supplemental school supplies. The Planning Committee thanked sponsors for this year’s Back-to-School Fair:

Excessive heat warning continues today

An excessive heat warning continues until 9 p.m. Friday, July 30, according to the National Weather Service.

Today could see a high near 94 with a heat index of 103, the weather service said.

There will be dangerously hot conditions until 9 p.m., according to the weather service.

Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities, the weather service said.

Residents are advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on neighbors and relatives. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances, according to the weather service.

The area will start seeing some relief from the heat on the weekend, as temperatures reach a high near 88 on Saturday.

Today, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 94 and heat index values as high as 103, the weather service said. A light and variable wind will become east southeast 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon.

Tonight, it will be partly cloudy, with a low of 74 and an east wind of 6 to 8 mph according to the weather service.

Saturday, there is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1 p.m., the weather service said. The high will be near 88 with a heat index as high as 95. A south southeast wind of 8 to 10 mph will become north in the morning. Less than a tenth of an inch of rain is possible.

Saturday night, there is a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 1 a.m., according to the weather service. The low will be around 68. A north northeast wind of 5 to 8 mph will become calm after midnight. Less than a tenth of an inch of raiin is possible.

Sunday, it will be sunny, with a high near 87 and a calm wind becoming north 5 to 9 mph in the morning, the weather service said.

Sunday night, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 64, according to the weather service.
