Wildcats off and running in 2021 track season

Washington High School held the Wyandotte Relays track meet on Friday afternoon. The event included athletes from Bishop Ward, Harmon, Turner, Schlagle, Sumner and Wyandotte high schools from Kansas City, Kansas, along with Northeast and Southeast high schools from Kansas City, Missouri.

In the boys’ team competition, Washington took the team trophy with 119 points, followed by Bishop Ward with 103 and Wyandotte with 80. Washington’s girls’ team took top honors also, with 74 points. Northeast took second place with 73 points, and Sumner took home third with 66.

Turner dominated the distance events, winning the boys 800, 1600 and 3200 meters and the girls 800 and 1600 meters.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, spectators were not allowed inside the stadium, but devoted fans lined the fences along Leavenworth Road and the school parking lot.

The meet kicked off the spring 2021 track season, which will culminate in the state championships in Wichita, May 27 to 29.

Charges filed in ‘good Samaritan’ case

Charges have been filed in connection with the death of a “good Samaritan” who stopped to help a motorist on March 14 near 59th and Nogard Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas.

Ramon Vazquez-Carmona, 42, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter while driving under the influence, which is a felony, according to documents filed by the district attorney.

He also was charged with a second count, unlawfully driving a motor vehicle on a public highway without having a valid driver’s license, which is a misdemeanor.

A pickup truck allegedly driven by Vazquez-Carmona struck and killed Cynthia Marlene Goulding, who had stopped to help the driver of a sport utility vehicle that had been in an accident. According to police accounts at the time, the SUV had been struck by a sedan whose occupants fled on foot. Goulding was standing next to the SUV to check on the driver when the SUV was hit by a pickup truck, according to police accounts. It happened around 3:04 a.m. March 14, according to police.

Vazquez-Carmona was in the Wyandotte County Jail from March 14 to 16 and is now in federal custody, according to the DA’s spokesman.

KCK student named to dean’s list in Nebraska

Marcus Davis, Kansas City, Kansas, has been named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Peru State College, Peru, Nebraska.

Students on the dean’s list have a grade point average between 3.5 and 3.99 for the semester, have completed at least 12 graded credit hours during the past semester, have no incomplete grades for the semester and are seeking their first degree.
