Santa Claus to make appearance at NFM today

A socially distanced Santa Claus will be making appearances at Nebraska Furniture Mart beginning Wednesday, Dec. 2.

Santa’s schedule will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on selected weekdays, including Dec. 2, and he also will make appearances on some weekends from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Other Santa Claus appearance dates will be Saturday, Dec. 5, Monday, Dec. 7, Wednesday, Dec. 9, Saturday, Dec. 12 and Saturday, Dec. 19.

Children may visit with Santa Claus, and guests may bring their own cameras or smart phones to take pictures with Santa.

Santa Claus will be six feet away from the children, and masks will be required for conversations prior to pictures, according to NFM’s webpage. Masks can be removed for the photo and then put back on afterwards.

There are enhanced cleaning practices, social distancing and contact-free procedures in place at NFM. Customers and staff are required to wear masks in the store.

Reservations are not needed for the photo with Santa events.

Toy drive planned for children

A drive-through toy collection will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, for children served by CASA of Johnson and Wyandotte Counties.

The drive will be held at the CASA offices at 6950 Squibb, Mission, Kansas. The collection will be safe and contactless, according to organizers.

Those interested in donating a toy may bring gifts for toddlers through teens.

Santa Claus will hand out candy canes to donors while volunteers wearing masks will take the gifts from cars without contact. The gifts will be stored in the building.

Those who are not able to come by that day also can donate funds to the CASA website at casajwc.org, or call 913-715-4040.

Volunteers with CASA help abused and neglected children through the court and foster care system.

Police notes

Disturbance reported near 6th and Minnesota

An individual was taken to the hospital after a disturbance at 9:51 a.m. Dec. 1 in the 600 block of Minnesota Avenue, according to a social media post by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

According to the report, an individual was screaming and walking in and out of traffic at the location. The person continued to stand in the street, throw his personal items and take his clothes off, according to the report.

After unsuccessfully trying to get the person to leave the area, officers took the suspect into protective custody and requested emergency medical service. While waiting for EMS to respond, the person tried to kick, bite and wrap his legs around officers, according to the report. The person was taken into custody and taken to a hospital for evaluation, the report stated.

Victim hit in head by baseball bat

Officers went to a hospital on a dispatched call on Dec. 1, according to a social media post by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

A victim went to the 1300 block of North 7th Street to try to get a job around 1 p.m. Dec. 1, according to the report. The victim stated an argument developed, and a suspect swung a baseball bat at his head, striking him, the report stated.

Commercial burglary reported on Kansas Avenue

A commercial burglary was reported at 4 p.m. Nov. 30 in the 6000 block of Kansas Avenue, according to a social media report by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

Officers responded to a commercial burglary report call, and found that an unknown suspect damaged the property to gain access, according to the report.

The suspect took property without permission, according to the report.

Victim struck by gunfire

Officers responded to a shooting call at 11:29 p.m. Nov. 30 in the 1000 block of North 29th Street, according to a social media post by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

A victim was in the roadway with an apparent gunshot wound, according to the report. The victim was taken to a hospital, the report stated.
