Area receives heavy rain, strong winds in storm

Heavy rain, lightning and strong winds moved through Wyandotte County this morning.

From 1,500 to 5,000 people were without electrical power in Kansas City, Kansas, during the storm, according to the Board of Public Utilities’ outage map.

Flash flooding was reported in different parts of the metropolitan area. The National Weather Service reported that wind gusts were 45 mph at 8:37 a.m. at the Johnson County Executive Airport in Olathe.

The storm was from around 6:30 a.m. through 9 a.m., and it moved south and east of Wyandotte County by 9:30 a.m.

Another round of thunderstorms may form early Tuesday morning, the weather service said. Some storms could be strong, but widespread severe weather was not expected Tuesday.

The Tuesday storms could start between midnight and sunrise and last into the early afternoon hours, according to the weather service.

While severe weather is not anticipated, the Tuesday storms could bring heavy rain, leading to some isolated minor flooding, the weather service said.

A quarter to half-inch of rain is possible Tuesday morning, according to the weather service.

Today, rain is in the forecast through 11 a.m. After the rain, it will be mostly cloudy with a high near 81 and a north northeast wind of 7 to 15 mph, gusting as high as 21 mph, the weather service said.

Tonight, there is a 60 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1 a.m., with a low of 65, and a northeast wind of 8 mph, according to the weather service. Between a quarter and half-inch of rain is possible.

Tuesday, there is a 50 or 60 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a high near 80, the weather service said. Less than a tenth of an inch of rain is possible.

Tuesday night, it will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 66 and a northeast wind of 5 mph becoming calm after midnight, according to the weather service.

Wednesday, there is a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 p.m., with a high near 85 and a calm wind, the weather service said.

Wednesday night, it will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 68, according to the weather service.

Thursday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 85, the weather service said.

Thursday night, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 56, according to the weather service.

Friday, it will be sunny, with a high near 81, the weather service said.

Friday night, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 57, according to the weather service.

Saturday, it will be sunny, with a high near 84, the weather service said.

Saturday night, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 65, according to the weather service.

Sunday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 86, the weather service said.

Area under severe thunderstorm warning, power outages reported

A power outage was reported on Monday morning in parts of Kansas City, Kansas, during a thunderstorm.

About 5,000 customers were without power around 7 a.m. Monday.

By 8 a.m., the number was down to around 1,600 customers affected in Kansas City, Kansas, according to the BPU power outage map.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect in Wyandotte County from 7:57  a.m. Aug. 31 through 8:30 a.m. Aug. 31, according to the National Weather Service.

After more lightning, the number of customers without power went up to more than 3,700 at 8:39 a.m., then it was back down to more than 2,800 at 8:47 a.m., and down to around 1,500 at 8:57 a.m., according to the BPU power outage map.

This storm has 60 mph wind gusts and penny-size hail, according to the weather service. Damage is possible to roofs, siding and trees.

Residents should move to an interior room on the lowest floor of the building, according to the weather service.

Free COVID-19 testing offered

Wyandotte County reported a cumulative 5,906 COVID-19 cases on Sunday, an increase of 30 cases since Saturday, with 113 deaths, the same amount as Saturday, according to the Unified Government COVID-19 webpage. (From UG COVID-19 webpage)

Free COVID-19 testing is planned from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31, at Oak Ridge Baptist Church, 9301 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas.

The tests are offered through Swope Health and the Health Equity Task Force.

Free testing also is offered for those who live and work in Wyandotte County from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Unified Government Health Department parking lot at 6th and Ann, Kansas City, Kansas. For more information, call 311.

The KC Region COVID-19 Resource Hub reported 32,482 positive cumulative COVID-19 cases on Sunday in a nine-county area in Greater Kansas City.

Kansas City, Missouri, had 8,466 cumulative cases on Sunday, and Johnson County had 8,050 cases on Sunday, according to the KC Region COVID-19 Resource Hub.
