KCKPS convocation to be online this year

The annual opening of schools convocation that is held each year by the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools will be online at 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24.

According to a spokesman for the school district, the annual event welcomes teachers, support staff and administration back to school. School leaders set the agenda for the year, giving it positive energy, purpose and a direction.

Speakers will incude Randy Lopez, president of the KCKPS Board of Education; Dominick DeRosa, NEA-KCK president; and special guests.

Because of the risk of COVID-19, the district will show the annual event on video, according to the spokesman. While more than 2,500 teachers and staff will not gather for the convocation this year, they will be able to participate remotely.

The convocation will be shown on the school district’s cable television channel, KCKPS-TV, on Google Fiber channel 145 and Spectrum Cable channel 18.

Those who don’t have cable access may watch the convocation on the KCKPS website at www.kckps.org, on the home page under Live On-Demand.

The video also will be livestreamed on the district’s YouTube channel at 9 a.m. Aug. 24.

The Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools will start the school year on Sept.8, and classes will be held remotely for the first nine weeks.

After chase, suspect’s vehicle hits police vehicle and others

Police located a stolen vehicle about 7:37 p.m. Aug. 20 in the 1100 block of Sandusky, according to a social media post by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

Officers saw the suspects try to ram other vehicles, and a chase started, according to the report

The pursuit ended in the 5300 bock of Parallel Parkway, where the suspect’s vehicle struck another vehicle and a police vehicle before becoming disabled, the report stated.

Two persons were taken into custody, according to the report.

Victim of accident on Mission Road found to be suspect in shooting

The victim of an accident at 10 p.m. Aug. 20 in the 4600 block of Mission Road was found to be a suspect in a shooting in the area, according to a social media post by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

Officers responded to the possible shooting and injury accident call and found a person who had crashed in a stolen black Dodge Ram, according to the report. The driver was a suspect in a shooting.

Victim attacked on Willard Court

A victim stated an unknown person approached her from behind, put a cloth around her neck and began to strangle her about 6 a.m. Aug. 20 in the 4100 block of Willard Court, according to a social media post by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

The suspect fled. The victim was taken to a hospital, according to the report.

Assault reported on South Mill Street

An aggravated assault was reported at 6 p.m. Aug. 20 in the 300 block of South Mill Street, according to a social media post by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

According to a victim, the suspect was attempting to deal with a family matter, and allegedly the suspect pointed a black semi-automatic pistol at the victim, causing him to fear for his life, according to the report. The suspect then fled.

Temperatures begin to warm up again

Today, it’s summer again as temperatures may reach a high of 88, according to the National Weather Service.

The unseasonable cool weather in the past few days is changing, the weather service said.

An upper ridge will flatten out, and also expand eastward, allowing temperatures to rise to 90 on Saturday and the low to mid-90s on Saturday, according to the weather service. A weak front could lead to showers and storms Saturday night into Sunday, but it is uncertain at this time if Wyandotte County will get any rain.

Today, it will be sunny with a high near 88 and a south southwest wind of 3 to 6 mph, the weather service said.

Tonight, it will be clear, with a low of 65 and a south wind around 6 mph, according to the weather service.

Saturday, it will be sunny, with a high near 90 and a south southwest wind of 3 to 7 mph, the weather service said.

Saturday night, there is a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 a.m., according to the weather service. The low will be around 69 with a calm wind becoming south around 5 mph after midnight.

Sunday, it will be sunny with a high near 92 and a southwest wind of 3 to 6 mph, the weather service said.

Sunday night, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 70, according to the weather service.
