Nicholas Schafer

Kansas City, Kansas, Police Officer Nicholas J. Schafer has been charged with two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child under the age of 14.

Schafer has been with the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department for more than 10 years, according to Wyandotte County District Attorney Mark Dupree.

He faces a maximum life sentence with the possibility of parole after 25 years. The district attorney’s office stated the charges stemmed from a single incident.

Schafer was being held in the Wyandotte County Jail on a bond of $250,000, according to officials.

District Attorney Dupree also announced that his office would start a community integrity unit, and will request three funded officer positions to investigate complaints. They would investigate instances of excessive force or misconduct by police and law enforcement officers. This would be an expansion of the district attorney’s conviction integrity unit.

Kansas City, Kansas, Police Chief Michael York has issued a statement on the case:

“The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department was made aware of an incident involving one of our police officers. The allegations were immediately forwarded to the KCKPD Internal Affairs Division for investigation. As a result of that investigation, the Wyandotte County District Attorney’s Office has filed charges against that officer. The officer has been placed on un-paid administrative leave. As Chief of Police, I hold myself and my employees to the highest standards. All complaints against members of our Department are investigated thoroughly. Victim of fatal accident identified

Kansas City, Kansas, police today identified the victim of a motorcycle accident on June 4.

The victim of the fatal accident at West 39th Avenue and Merriam Lane was Justin Owens, 33, a resident of Edwardsville, Kansas.

According to a police spokesman, Owens was traveling east on Merriam Lane at 7:39 p.m. June 4 when he left the roadway and struck a building. He suffered fatal injuries.

The accident is under investigation by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department’s Traffic Support Unit – Critical Collision Response Team, according to the spokesman.

Homicide victim identified

Kansas City, Kansas, police have identified a victim of a homicide at 7:47 p.m. June 4 in the 3400 block of Barnett Avenue.

The victim was identified as Narbu Tamang, a 26-year-old male resident of Kansas City, Kansas, according to a police spokesman.

Police responded to a call that there was a shooting at the address, the spokesman stated. When they arrived, officers found a victim deceased with an apparent gunshot wound.

A police spokesman said a suspect has been taken into custody.

The spokesman stated the incident is under investigation by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division. Anyone with information was asked to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
