Ramp, lane closures planned on highways in Wyandotte County

Numerous ramps and lanes are scheduled to be closed in Wyandotte County from the weekend to Friday, May 22, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Traffic on all these projects will be diverted using mobile lane closures, signs and traffic cones, according to a spokesman.

For pavement grinding and road sealing, closures include:
• The two right lanes on northbound and southbound I-635 from 48th Street to K-32,
• The on-off ramps on northbound I-635 from eastbound and westbound State Avenue,
• The ramps from northbound and southbound I-635 to westbound and eastbound I-70,
• The on-off ramps at northbound and southbound I-635 to K-32,
• The on-off ramps at westbound and eastbound I-70 to 38th Street.

Lanes will be closed from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. May 18 to May 22. Ramps will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. May 18 to May 22.

For grading work, the closures include:
• The ramp from eastbound I-70 to southbound Turner Diagonal.
• The ramp will be closed May 18, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

• The ramp from southbound Turner Diagonal to westbound I-70.
• The ramp will be closed on May 18 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

For bridge maintenance, the shoulder closure includes:
• Northbound and southbound I-435 at the Missouri River.
• The shoulder will be closed, May 18 to May 22, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The spokesman stated that KDOT urges all motorists to be alert and obey the warning signs when approaching and driving through a highway work zone. UG committees to meet tonight

Two Unified Government committees are scheduled to meet on Monday, May 18.

The Public Works and Safety Committee will meet at 5 p.m. Monday, followed by the Administration and Human Services Committee. They will be virtual meetings held on Zoom.

On the agenda for the PWS meeting are an agreement with Westwood for 47th Avenue improvements, Rainbow Boulevard improvements to Mission Road; a police and sheriff’s grant application for $318,256 for the fiscal year 2020 Coronavirus Emergency Supplemental Funding , to be used for purchasing items for use when handling incidents, directly related to coronavirus exposure; an update on the police body camera project; and a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant application for the Kansas City, Kansas, Fire Department, requesting 18 additional firefighters.

On the AHS meeting agenda are the reappointment of Rachel Jefferson to the REACH Healthcare Foundation’s Community Advisory Committee, submitted by Alley Porter, commission liaison; and an update on technology initiatives including connections to the UG fiber network, upgrades to the UG geospatial technology and the UG’s move into cloud technologies.

Police notes

Shot fired at victim

A suspect began yelling at a victim, then pointed a gun at the victim and fired a shot, according to a social media post by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

It happened at 4:26 p.m. May 17 in the 2900 block of Orville Avenue, according to police.

There were no reported injuries and the suspect was taken into custody at the scene, according to the report.

Battery reported

During an argument at 4:18 a.m. May 17, a suspect grabbed a victim’s neck, according to a social media post by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department. The victim was not able to breathe, according to a statement in the report.

The victim was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the report stated.
