Shooting reported near I-70 and 57th Street

A shooting has been reported Saturday night on the 57th Street off-ramp of westbound I-70, according to Kansas City, Kansas, police. The off-ramp was closed. (KC Scout photo)

A shooting was reported about 8:50 p.m. Saturday, May 30, on the North 57th Street off-ramp from westbound I-70, according to the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

Officers responding to the scene discovered two persons, a male and female, both about 40 years old, with apparent gunshot wounds, a police spokesman stated.

A suspect was taken into custody at the scene, the spokesman stated.

The North 57th Street exit off westbound I-70 was closed during the investigation.

The Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department Criminal Investigation Bureau is investigating. Police asked anyone with information to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS.

Wyandotte County has moved into Phase 2 under Kansas Ad Astra reopening plan. Local health officials said under this plan, people should keep a distance of 6 feet between themselves and others. They may sit closer to people who live in their households. Also, people should wear masks and should wash hands or use hand sanitizer. Some faith groups will continue holding online or video services. In Wyandotte County, those who are older than 60 or who have other medical conditions should continue staying home, according to the Wyandotte County health officials Those who are sick should stay home, according to officials.

Residents are advised to visit the social media page of their church or faith organization, or to call them or email them, to see changes that have been made to regular schedules, or if there are video services planned on Sunday.

Christ the King Catholic Church, 53rd and Leavenworth Road, will hold a Community Blood Center blood drive from noon to 5 p.m. Monday, June 8, in Davern Hall. For more information and to sign up, visit www.savealifenow.org. Currently, the blood center is taking advance reservations.

Open Door Baptist Church, Kansas City, Kansas, will have livestream services at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 31, on the church’s website https://www.opendoorkc.com/.

Stony Point Christian Church, Kansas City, Kansas, plans to live-stream the music and message at 10:15 a.m. Sunday, May 31, on its Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/StonyPointChristianChurch, and people are welcome to attend in person, using social distancing and other health measures.

St. Patrick Catholic Church, Kansas City, Kansas, has a Mass online for May 31 at https://www.facebook.com/StPatrickKCK/. St. Patrick Church also has returned to in-person Masses, with reservations being taken. St. Patrick Church plans a food drive to collect food for Catholic Charities at noon Saturday, June 6.

Filing deadline is noon Monday for 2020 elections

The filing deadline for the 2020 elections is coming up at noon Monday, June 1, in Kansas.

Candidates for office must submit filing documents and fees by noon June 1. The secretary of state’s office in Topeka will be open for filing, with social distancing and sanitizing precautions in place. The office is at 210 S.W. 10th, in Memorial Hall in Topeka.

June 1 also is the deadline for voters to change party affiliation.

Tuesday, July 14, will be the last day to register to vote for the primary election, which is Tuesday, Aug. 4.

The general election is Tuesday, Nov. 3.

The deadline to apply for advance ballots for the primary is Tuesday, July 28, according to the secretary of state’s office.

The Wyandotte County Election Office will have mail-in ballots for those interested in applying. The office currently is working with voters through email, telephone and at https://www.wycokck.org/Election.aspx.

In the Kansas Senate, 4th District, incumbent State Sen. David Haley, a Democrat, faces a challenge in the general election from Republican Sam Stillwell. Both live in Kansas City, Kansas.

Incumbent State Sen. Kevin Braun, Kansas City, Kansas, a Republican, faces a challenge from Jeffrey Pittman, a Leavenworth Democrat, in the 5th District contest.

State Sen. Pat Pettey, D-6th Dist., the incumbent, has opposition in the general election from Diana Whittington, a Republican. Both reside in Kansas City, Kansas.

In the 31st District, Kansas House, incumbent Rep. Louis Ruiz, a Democrat, faces opposition in the general election from Landon Griffith, a Republican.

Incumbent State Rep. Pam Curtis, D-32nd Dist., faces opposition in the primary from Oscar Irenia, a Democrat. Also filing for the 32nd District was Greg Conchola, a Republican.

Incumbent State Rep. Tom Burroughs, a Democrat, has general election opposition in the 33rd District from Jordan Michael Mackey, Bonner Springs, a Republican. Also running for the 33rd District in the general election is Libertarian Rick Parsons, Bonner Springs.

Incumbent State Rep. Valdenia Winn, D-34th Dist., did not have opposition.

Incumbent State Rep. Broderick Henderson, D-35th Dist., has opposition in the primary election from Nelson R. Gabriel, a Democrat. In the general election, also running is Mark David Snelson, a Republican.

Incumbent State Rep. Kathy Wolfe Moore, D-36th Dist., a Democrat, has opposition in the general election from Mark Gilstrap, a Republican. Gilstrap is a former state representative.

Incumbent State Rep. Stan S. Frownfelter, D-37th Dist., has opposition in the primary from Aaron Coleman, a Democrat.

Filing for Wyandotte County District Court Judge, Division 1, was Judge Robert P. Burns. Judge Michael A. Russell filed in Division 2. Judge Courtney Mikesic filed in Division 7. Judge Jane Sieve Wilson filed in Division 8. Judge Daniel Cahill filed in Division 9. Judge Renee S. Henry filed in Division 13. Judge Jennifer Orth Myers filed in Division 14. Judge Constance M. Alvey filed in Division 16.

Incumbent Mark A. Dupree Sr., a Democrat, is running for re-election as Wyandotte County District Attorney. He faces a primary challenge from Kristiane Bryant, a Democrat.

Four Republicans have filed for U.S. Representative, 3rd District, challenging Democratic incumbent Rep. Sharice Davids of Roeland Park. The four Republicans are Amanda L. Adkins, Overland Park; Mike Beehler, Leawood; Adrienne Vallejo Foster, Overland Park; and Sara Hart Weir, Mission.

Running in the general election for the U.S. Representative, 3rd District, position is Libertarian Steven A. Hohe, Shawnee.

As U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts, a Republican, plans to retire, 11 candidates now have filed to run in the primary election.

Running for the U.S. Senate in the general election will be Jason Buckley, a Libertarian from Overland Park.
