Black History Month program today to be about town of Nicodemus

A Black History Month program, “Children of the Promised Land,” will be presented from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas.

The history topic will be the town of Nicodemus, Kansas, the only remaining western town established by African Americans during the Reconstruction Period following the Civil War.

The town is a National Historical Site. A pictorial history will explore the experiences of the mothers and their children in Nicodemus, some of whom were the first in their families who were born free.

The discussion will explore child-rearing during and after slavery, stories of children conceived in slavery but born free, and how baby names were changed or used to reflect attitudes about free-born children.

This program had been scheduled earlier, but was rescheduled for tonight.

Two suspects taken into custody in homicide case

Two suspects have been taken into custody in connection with a homicide on Jan. 28 in the 4300 block of Rainbow Boulevard.

According to a Kansas City, Kansas, police spokesman, officers responded to the location at 10:35 p.m. Jan. 28 on a shooting call. They found a man who was deceased, who had been shot inside a Pizza Hut at that address. The victim later was identified as Laron Briggs, 25, a resident of Kansas City, Kansas.

The Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS.

Shooting and pursuit reported
A suspect shot a victim during a verbal altercation around 12:01 a.m. Feb. 11 in the 4100 block of Parallel Parkway, according to a social media post by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

An officer located the suspect and a vehicle pursuit was started, the report stated. The pursuit went into Kansas City, Missouri, and the suspect was taken into custody, according to the report. The victim had non-life-threatening injuries.

Burglary reported
Suspects entered a business in the 2800 block of South 47th Street at 7:42 a.m. Feb. 10 and tried to take property, according to a social media report by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department. The suspects were unsuccessful and did not take anything, according to the report.

Aggravated battery reported
Police were called about a man lying in the street about 4:52 p.m. Feb. 10 in the 1200 block of Quindaro Boulevard, according to a social media report by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

The victim had major injuries and was believed to have been hit with a rock during an altercation, according to the report. The victim was taken to a hospital.
