Five Wyandotte County students graduate from Washburn

Washburn University has announced the students in its fall 2019 graduating class. More than 400 students completed their courses for associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees.

“Every single one of these students worked hard during their time here at Washburn University,” said Dr. Jerry Farley, Washburn University president. “I’m proud of their success and have no doubt they will continue to be successful as they navigate their careers.”

Graduating students from Wyandotte County include:

  • Katie Carpenter of Bonner Springs graduated with a Associate of Liberal Studies in Liberal Studies.
  • Isabella Willhite of Kansas City, Kansas, graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • Annie Carpenter of Bonner Springs graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • Jaime Weible of Bonner Springs graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.
  • Wonder Golden of Kansas City, Kansas, graduated with a Master of Arts in Human Services.

Washburn University, founded in 1865, is a public university in Topeka, Kansas, with nearly 7,000 students.

Police notes

Officers arrest intoxicated driver after chase

Officers tried to stop a vehicle for multiple traffic violations about 7:46 p.m. Dec. 26 in the 5500 block of Kansas Avenue, according to a social media post by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

The suspect did not stop and there was a short pursuit, police reported. The pursuit ended when the vehicle came to a stop after hitting a curb, according to police.

According to the police department, the suspect was intoxicated and was taken into custody.

Rain in forecast for tonight, weekend

Rain chances will increase overnight through early Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

Widespread amounts around an inch are possible across the area, with locally higher amounts possible, the weather service said.

Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected Saturday evening, according to the weather service.

Isolated thunder is expected Saturday afternoon and evening, and a few strong storms are possible, the weather service said. The strongest storms will be to the southeast of the Kansas City area, according to the weather service.

The forecast calls for rain, not snow, in Wyandotte County for Saturday and Sunday.

Today, it will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 45 and an east wind of 5 to 7 mph, the weather service said.

Tonight, there is a 70 percent chance of rain, mainly after 4 a.m., according to the weather service. The temperature will rise to around 48 by 5 a.m. There is an east southeast wind of 7 to 10 mph. Less than a tenth of an inch of rain is in the forecast.

Saturday, there is a 100 percent chance of rain, with thunderstorms also possible after noon, the weather service said. The high will be near 61 with a south southeast wind of 11 to 16 mph, gusting as high as 25 mph. Between a half and three-quarters of an inch of rain is predicted.

Saturday night, there is an 80 percent chance of rain before midnight, with a low of 38, according to the weather service. A south wind of 6 to 9 mph will become west in the evening. Winds may gust as high as 21 mph. Between a quarter and half-inch of rain is possible.

Sunday, there is a 20 percent chance of rain after noon, with a high near 42, the weather service said. A west wind of 7 to 10 mph will gust as high as 22 mph.

Sunday night, it will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 29, according to the weather service.

Monday, it will be partly sunny, with a high near 38, the weather service said.
