Three KCK students awarded freshmen academic scholarships at Washburn

Three Kansas City, Kansas, students have been awarded a freshman academic scholarship at Washburn University, Topeka.


The renewable scholarships are awarded to graduating high school seniors with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and an ACT composite score of 21 or higher. Scholarship award amounts range from $500 to $5,000 based on academic performance.

Academic scholarship recipients from Kansas City, Kansas, include:
Megan Dorantes, graduate of Sumner Academy of Arts and Science;
Wyatt Oakland, graduate of Piper High School;
Essence Reese, graduate of Sumner Academy of Arts and Science.

Shots fired from vehicles near 34th and Parallel

Kansas City, Kansas, police received a call about shots fired from vehicles about 8:20 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, near 34th and Parallel.

The incident was referred to as a “rolling gun battle” by police on a social media post. A victim’s vehicle was struck, according to reports. The suspects’ vehicles fled the area.

A police spokesman stated that there were no injuries or arrests reported in connection with the shooting.
