KCK firefighters monitoring river levels

Kansas City, Kansas, firefighters are in a standby mode as the Missouri River is expected to crest Friday night or Saturday in the Wyandotte County area. In the meantime, some KCK firefighters have gone upstream to assist flooding victims.

While the river at Wyandotte County has been at moderate flood stage for some days, so far no water rescues have been needed here, according to Assistant Chief James “Morris” Letcher, public information officer for the Kansas City, Kansas, Fire Department.

Kansas City, Kansas, firefighters are currently watching the water levels, he said. Local officials have said they do not expect the flooding to affect any homes in Wyandotte County.

Some KCK firefighters have joined a team of metropolitan Kansas City firefighters that went to the assistance of flooding victims in Elwood, Kansas, which is near St. Joseph, Missouri, he said.

There were levee failures in the Elwood area, and evacuations are taking place.

This firefighting team has specialized in rescuing people from swift waters, often by boat.
