KCK student earns degree at Benedictine

Hannah Harrity, Kansas City, Kansas, has earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education and special education at Benedictine College, Atchison, Kansas.

The college graduated 67 students at the semester break, including seven with MBA degrees.

Founded in 1858, Benedictine College is a Catholic, Benedictine, residential, liberal arts college located on the bluffs above the Missouri River in Atchison, Kansas.

Public hearing date to be set for downtown grocery redevelopment district project plan

The downtown grocery redevelopment district’s project plan hearing date is on the agenda for the Monday evening meeting of the Economic Development and Finance Committee.

The EDF meeting will be held after the 5 p.m. Neighborhood and Community Development Committee meeting on Monday, Jan. 14, in the fifth-floor conference room, City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kansas.

According to the EDF agenda, a resolution will be considered that will set a public hearing on the proposed project plan at 7 p.m. March 28 in the Commission Chambers, lobby level, City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kansas.

Also on the EDF Committee agenda is a presentation on proposed UG debt policy revisions.

Also on the agenda is a presentation on the 2018 small business grant program, and the plans for 2019.

At the 5 p.m. meeting Jan. 14, the UG Neighborhood and Community Development Committee is scheduled to consider Land Bank property acquisition applications, and an update is scheduled on a Land Bank hold area in the downtown Kansas City, Kansas, area.

Rep. Davids to speak Friday at Congressional Forum

U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids, D-3rd Dist.

U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids, D-3rd Dist., will be the keynote speaker at the Kansas City, Kansas, Chamber of Commerce’s Congressional Forum series from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at Children’s Mercy Park, Kansas City, Kansas.

“We are thrilled to welcome newly sworn-in Congresswoman Davids to the Congressional Forum,” said Tony Privitera, vice president of Mark One Electric Co., Inc. and 2019 KCK Chamber board chair. “Every 3rd District Congressperson has been actively involved in the program since its inception, and we are delighted and eager to hear from our new representative.”

Rep. Davids was raised by a single mother, who served in the Army for 20 years. After graduating from Leavenworth High School, she worked her way through Johnson County Community College and the University of Missouri-Kansas City before earning a law degree from Cornell Law School.

As a first-generation college student who worked the entire time she was in college, Rep. Davids says she understands the importance of quality public schools and affordable higher education. It is that foundation that allowed her to go on to a successful career, focused on economic and community development, which included time as a White House Fellow under President Barack Obama.

Rep. Davids has said she wants others to have the same opportunities to achieve their goals, which is why she has focused her career on bringing more opportunities to the middle class. In Congress, Rep. Davids said she is putting Kansans first, working to get limit the influence of special interests and fighting to make health care more affordable and accessible to everyone.

Rep. Davids was sworn into the 116th Congress on Jan. 3, 2019. She is a resident of Roeland Park.
