Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Wyandotte County

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued until 1:15 p.m. for Wyandotte County, according to the National Weather Service.

The warning is for central Wyandotte County, as well as southwestern Leavenworth County and Johnson County.

At 12:36 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located over Linwood, Kansas, or near DeSoto, moving east at 45 mph, according to the weather service.

The storm may have 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-sized hail. Hail damage to vehicles, as well as wind damage to roofs, siding and trees, is possible.

Bonner Springs, Edwardsville and Kansas City, Kansas, are in the path of the storm, along with other communities in the surrounding area.

Residents are advised to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building, according to the weather service.

Weather advisory issued for Wyandotte County

A significant weather advisory has been issued for Wyandotte County and surrounding areas until 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, June 26.

The National Weather Service said Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm near Tonganoxie, moving east at 45 mph, at 12:15 p.m.

Half-inch hail and wind gusts up to 50 mph are possible with the storm, the weather service said.

Locations in the path of the storm include Kansas City, Kansas, Bonner Springs in Wyandotte County, and surrounding areas in Johnson County and Kansas City, Missouri, according to the weather service.

KCK student receives degree with honors from Morningside College

Jessica S. Paxton, Kansas City, Kansas, was awarded a Bachelor of Science in elementary education degree from Morningside College, Sioux City, Iowa, this spring.

Paxton graduated summa cum laude.

Paxton received the Marcia McNee Elementary Education Award at the annual Omicron Delta Kappa Honors Convocation at the college. ODK is a national leadership honor society that recognizes and encourages superior scholarship, leadership and exemplary character.

Morningside is a private, coeducational four-year liberal arts college with an enrollment of 2,800 students in Sioux City, Iowa.
