KCK students at K-State outstanding in national speech tournament

Kansas City, Kansas, students did well representing Kansas State University at the American Forensics Association-National Individual Events Tournament April 9 at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The K-State speech team finished 10th in the nation in the contest. The university’s team competed against teams from 62 schools across the nation at the tournament.

Logan Stacer, a senior in communications studies from Kansas City, Kansas, went to the finals, placing second in communication analysis, fourth in informative, and fifth in poetry interpretation. A 2014 graduate of Piper High School, Stacer was the seventh overall speaker in the nation.

Also, Michelle Briggs, a senior in psychology from Kansas City, Kansas, advanced in the informative and poetry interpretation events. She was one of two students who advanced to the quarterfinals, finishing in the top 24 of their events.

42nd annual Grinter Quilt Show to be April 27-28

The Grinter Quilters plan their 42nd annual quilt show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 27 and 28 at Grinter Place, 1400 S. 78th St., Kansas City, Kansas.

According to Carleen Seaborn, a handquilter with the Grinter Quilters, quilts from the community may be entered into the show. This year there will be two first-place awards, one for machine quilts and one for hand quilts, she added.

Most of the quilts will be on display at the Grinter Barn. The nearby Grinter House state historic site also has some quilts on display.

Anyone who wishes to show a quilt may bring it to Grinter on Tuesday, April 24. Admission to the quilt show to see the 50 to 60 quilts on display at the Grinter Barn is free.

As part of the annual event, Teresa Ward, who does long-arm quilting, will give a presentation and trunk show at 1 p.m. April 28 at the Grinter House, Seaborn said. Admission for the program with Teresa Ward April 28 will be $6, which will include a tour of the historic Grinter House.

The Grinter Quilters also are making an opportunity quilt this year, she said. It is a modern design with a lot of batik fabrics used, she said.

Problems with merging on I-35 precede rollover accident

A man was injured after a problem with merging on I-35 southbound at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 14, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper’s report.

A vehicle was merging into a Pontiac Grand Am’s lane on I-35 south of Antioch in Johnson County, and the other vehicle was too close to the Grand Am, according to the trooper’s report.

The Grand Am swerved to the left to avoid a collision and overcorrected, the report stated. The Grand Am then veered right and struck a Kia Optima, according to the trooper’s report.

Then the Grand Am continued to the right, striking a jersey barrier wall and rolling over. The Grand Am came to rest on its roof, the trooper’s report stated.

The driver of the Grand Am, a 50-year-old man from Olathe, Kansas, was injured and taken to the hospital, according to the report.

The driver of the Optima, a 27-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, woman, was not injured, the report stated.

Also not injured were a 36-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, man in the Optima, a 13-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, girl in the Optima, and a 17-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, male in the Optima, according to the report.
