Wyandotte County students awarded scholarships from Fort Hays State

Local students have been awarded scholarships from Fort Hays State University for the 2016- 2017 academic year.

From Bonner Springs:

• Alexis Sechrist, a 2016 Bonner Springs High School graduate, accepted a $2,000 Access to Academic Opportunity Grant. Sechrist, daughter of James and Amber Sechrist, Bonner Springs, plans to major in nursing.

• Payton Sechrist, a 2016 Bonner Springs High School graduate, accepted a $2,000 Access to Academic Opportunity Grant. Sechrist, daughter of James and Amber Sechrist, Bonner Springs, plans to major in communication sciences and disorders.

From Kansas City, Kan.:

• Aaron Galvan, a 2016 Sumner Academy of Arts and Science graduate, accepted a $1,500 Hays City Scholar Award and a $900 Academic Opportunity Award in chemistry. Galvan, son of Maria E. Vitz, Kansas City, Kan., plans to major in chemistry.

• Millie Talavera, a 2016 Sumner Academy of Arts and Science graduate, accepted won a drawing for a $150 Eastern Kansas Region FHSU Tiger Scholar Award. Talavera, daughter of Susan Serrano, Kansas City, Kan., plans to major in psychology.

• Tatum Monley, a 2016 Piper High School graduate, accepted a $1,500 Hays City Scholar Award and a $900 Academic Opportunity Award in the College of Business and Entrepreneurship. Monley, daughter of Michelle Monley, Kansas City, Kan., and Patrick Monley, Kansas City, Kan., plans to major in accounting.

• Kai-Amani Gilbert-Walker, a 2016 Sumner Academy graduate, accepted a $2,000 Access to Academic Opportunity Grant and a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in psychology. Gilbert-Walker, daughter of Lanique Gilbert, Kansas City, Kan., plans to major in psychology.

• Kearyn Zahnter, a 2016 Sumner Academy of Arts and Science graduate, accepted a $4,000 Access to Academic Opportunity Grant, a $1,500 Hays City Scholar Award and a $900 Academic Opportunity Award in biological sciences. Zahnter, daughter of Brandon and Summer Wendt, Kansas City, Kan., plans to major in biology.

Bonner Springs student serves on mission trip to France

Rachael Jensen, from Bonner Springs, Kan., traveled to France as a team co-leader on a Simpson University team this year.

Jensen is majoring in psychology at Simpson University in Redding, Calif.

She participates in WorldServe, a team that goes through intensive training to help prepare formission trips. The teams provide service to communities across the globe.

Indictment: Bank employee in Great Bend embezzled more than $73,600

A former employee of a bank in Great Bend was indicted Wednesday on a charge of embezzling more than $73,600, acting U.S. Attorney Tom Beall said.

Kaden Herman, 19, Great Bend, Kan., is charged with one count of embezzlement by a bank employee.

The indictment alleges that in May 2016 Herman was working for Landmark National Bank in Great Bend when he embezzled more than $73,600 from the bank. If convicted, he faces a penalty of up to 30 years in federal prison and a fine up to $1 million. The FBI investigated. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Hart is prosecuting.
