Flash flood emergency warning issued; residents asked to take precautions

A flash flood emergency warning has been issued for eastern Wyandotte County, according to the National Weather Service.

A flash flood emergency for the immediate downtown Kansas City area has been issued, the weather service said.

Doppler radar indicated heavy rain across the warned area at 9:43 p.m. and life-threatening flash flooding is already occurring, the weather service said.

The weather service advised residents to move to higher ground now. This is an extremely dangerous and life-threatening situation, the weather service said. Do not attempt to travel unless you are fleeing an area subject to flooding or under an evacuation order, the weather service said.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding, according to the weather service.

A flash flood warning means flooding is imminent or occurring. If you are in the warned area, move to higher ground immediately. Residents living along streams and creeks should take immediate precautions to protect life and property.
