Storms possible in first few days of week

Isolated thunderstorms are expected again this afternoon through early this evening, according to the National Weather Service.

While widespread hazardous weather is not anticipated, locally heavy rain or briefly gusty winds are possible with any stronger storms that develop, the weather service said.

Storm chances and potential storm coverage increase for Tuesday and Wednesday, with isolated damaging winds and locally heavy rain possible, according to the weather service.

Drier conditions are then expected to round out the remainder of the work and school week.
Today, there is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly afternoon. The high will be near 86, the weather service said.

Tonight, a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms is in the forecast, according to the weather service. The low will be around 70, with an east northeast wind of 3 to 6 mph.

Tuesday, the chance of showers and thunderstorms is 50 percent. The high will be near 84, according to the weather service. Between a quarter and a half-inch of rain is possible.

Tuesday night, there is a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, the weather service said. The low is around 69. Between a tenth to a quarter of an inch of rain is likely.

Wednesday, there is a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a high near 81, the weather service said.

Weather and flood advisories issued

The National Weather Service issued a special weather advisory at 8:54 p.m. Sunday for Wyandotte County, as well as Leavenworth County and parts of Atchison, Lafayette, Platte, Jackson, Clay and Buchanan counties until 9:30 p.m.

Doppler radar was tracking a line of strong thunderstorms along a line extending from Rushville to near Oak Grove, and moving northwest at 5 mph, the weather service said.

Storms over the affected area could collapse and produce winds of up to 40 mph, the weather service said.

The weather service also has issued an urban and small stream flood advisory until 11:15 p.m. Sunday for Wyandotte County, as well as parts of Leavenworth County, Johnson County, Platte County, Jackson County and Clay County.

Up to one inch of rain has already fallen within a half hour in places, according to the weather service.

Hit-and-run crash reported on I-635

A hit-and-run crash was reported at 4:55 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, on northbound I-635 just south of I-70, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

A trooper’s crash report stated that two vehicles were northbound on I-635 when a 1997 Nissan passenger car rear-ended a Honda passenger car.

The driver of the Nissan fled on foot from the scene, the trooper’s report stated.

There was no license number for the Nissan, the report stated. It was towed away to the police tow lot.

The driver of the Honda, a 26-year-old man from Kansas City, Mo., was injured and taken to the hospital, the report stated.
