Gas prices at a low not seen since 2009

The last time gasoline prices were this low, it was 2009, according to AAA, which today released a report on national gas prices.

Today’s average price of $1.99 per gallon is the cheapest average since March 29, 2009, and the national average has moved lower for 50 of the past 59 days, largely due to an abundance of crude oil, an AAA spokesman said.

Pump prices are down by five cents a gallon per month, and 22 cents on the year.

In 2015, consumers paid an annual average of $2.40 per gallon, which was the lowest annual average since 2009, AAA said.

AAA believes consumer savings will continue through 2016, although averages may increase leading up to the summer driving season and the spring refinery maintenance period.

Missouri and Kansas, at $1.70 and $1.75 a gallon, are among the nation’s cheapest gasoline markets currently, AAA says. Drivers in California are paying an average of $2.87 a gallon.

In Kansas City, Kan., the current average gas price is $1.73 per gallon, according to AAA.

Three-vehicle crash reported

Three vehicles were involved in a crash this morning on I-35 northbound at I-635, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The crash happened at 7:42 a.m. Jan. 4 on I-35 northbound in Mission, Kan., according to the trooper’s report.

They were all northbound on I-35 when a Chevrolet passenger car rear-ended an Acura RL and pushed it into a Chevrolet Equinox, according to the trooper’s report.

The driver of the Chevrolet passenger car, a 25-year-old man from Norwich, Conn., was not injured, dthe report stated.

The Acura’s driver, a 29-year-old woman from Overland Park, Kan., was taken to a hospital with a possible injury, according to the report.

The driver of the Equinox, a 31-year-old woman from Olathe, Kan., was not injured, the trooper’s report stated.
