Kansas sets state record for highest Powerball sales in single drawing

Kansas has set a state record for the highest Powerball sales in a single drawing, according to Kansas Lottery officials.

Total Kansas sales for tonight’s Powerball $900 million drawing were $6.7 million, a spokesman said. That beats the previous record of $5.4 million on Nov. 28, 2012, when players were vying for a $587.5 Powerball jackpot.

The $6.7 million total is roughly 25 times what would be typical for a Saturday Powerball drawing with a much smaller jackpot, according to lottery officials. At the peak of the buying frenzy, which occurred from 6-7 p.m. Saturday night, players were buying Powerball tickets at the rate of $7,107 per minute.

The Powerball numbers drawn around 10 p.m. Saturday: 16 19 32 34 57 13
Power Play = 3.

No one won the $900 million jackpot in Saturday night’s drawing, according to officials.

According to the Kansas Lottery, no one in Kansas won the $1 million second prize.

One Kansas person did win $50,000 in Saturday’s Powerball drawing by matching four white balls and the Powerball number, according to lottery information.

About 219 persons in Kansas won $100 each in the Saturday night Powerball drawing, according to lottery information.

There were thousands of Kansans who won prizes of $7 and $4 in the drawing Saturday night. In all, $728,132 was the total amount Kansas players won in Saturday night’s Powerball drawing, according to lottery information.

If the jackpot had been hit by a single ticket sold in Kansas, here’s what the winner would have received if he or she would have selected the cash option:

Estimated Powerball jackpot – $900 million ($558 million cash option) for Saturday, Jan. 9.

If Kansas winner chooses cash option of $558 million, taxes would be:
25 percent federal = $139.5 million.
5 percent state = $27.9 million. (different rates for different states)
Total taxes = $167.4 million.
Winner’s payment = $390.6 million.

With no ticket matching all numbers tonight, the jackpot is expected to grow to an almost unbelievable $1.3 billion with a cash option of $806 million for Wednesday’s drawing.
