KPR to broadcast governor’s state of state address tonight

Kansas Public Radio will broadcast Gov. Sam Brownback’s state of the state address at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12.

Among this year’s expected topics in the Kansas Legislature are declining state revenues and funding for public schools.

The speech is expected to last about 30 minutes, and be followed by the Democratic Party response.

Later tonight, at 8 p.m., KPR will broadcast President Obama’s State of the Union address, followed by the GOP response.

Some Kansas City, Kan., residents may be able to hear the governor’s speech on KANU radio, 91.5 FM in Lawrence, Kan.

Major television networks including CBS, ABC, NBC and Fox, as well as PBS, are carrying the President’s State of the Union address at 8 p.m. tonight.

Resident dies following KCK home fire

A man in his mid-60s died following a house fire around 8:10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 5015 Argentine Blvd. in Kansas City, Kan., a spokesman for the Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department said.

Firefighters pulled the man from the single-story home, suffering from smoke inhalation and burns, and he was taken to the hospital, where he later died, the spokesman said.

When they arrived, 4 minutes after the call, firefighters saw flames showing from the back of the residence, and then they extinguished the fire within 25 minutes, the spokesman said. One of the residents had already evacuated the home and notified fire crews that a person was trapped inside the structure.

The spokesman said the cause of the fire is under investigation. The estimated damage to the home and contents is around $60,000, including $50,000 to the home and $10,000 to the contents, the spokesman said. The home’s pre-fire value was $70,000 and its contents $15,000.

There were no injuries to firefighters.
