Winter snowstorm poised to hit KC on Tuesday

Winter weather advisory in effect Tuesday morning

A winter weather advisory will go into effect at 9 a.m. Jan. 19 until midnight Tuesday night, according to the National Weather Service.

A winter storm is expected to move through the area on Tuesday.

There may be light freezing drizzle between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. in some areas, the weather service said. Snow could begin from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., lasting through midnight.

A glazing of ice south of I-70 will be possible, with 1 to 4 inches of snow area wide. About 2 to 3 inches are expected in the Kansas City area, according to the weather service.

There will probably not be heavy snow, but there could be a period of moderate snow with rates around 1 inch per hour at times during the evening commute, the weather service said.

The snow may be preceded by light freezing drizzle, especially south of the Missouri River, the weather service said. The storm will begin to the northwest, gradually moving southeast.

Freezing drizzle and light to moderate snow will bring visibility down to around a mile at times, the weather service said.

Roadways also may become snow-covered and ice-packed leading to slick conditions on all roads, according to the weather service.

There is also a chance of light snow Wednesday night into Thursday morning, the weather service said. Snow amounts are expected to remain around an inch or less.
